Baseball secures UAA series split with 8-2 victory over CWRU

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Brandeis University baseball team used a big fifth inning and continued strong pitching to defeat Case Western Reserve, 8-2, in the last game of a four-game University Athletic Association series, earning a split against the defending UAA champions.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 9-8, 2-2 UAA.
  • Case Western, 13-9, 2-2 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis got on the board in the third inning as sophomore Bobby Quill (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham Reg.) worked a walk, stole second, and came around to score on a Case Western error to give the Judges a 1-0 lead.
  • The Spartans answered in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back singles and an intentional walk loaded the bases before Calvin Gelle drove in two runs on a fielder's choice to put Case Western ahead, 2-1.
  • The Judges seized momentum in the fifth. After sophomore Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) singled and junior Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) reached on an error, a wild pitch brought home the tying run. Junior Mano Boutsikakis (Astoria, N.Y./Xavier) followed with a pinch-hit RBI double to give Brandeis the lead, and junior Matt Chafin (Canton, Mass./Canton) delivered the biggest hit of the inning, tripling to right field to drive in two more. Brandeis plated four runs in the frame to take a 5-2 advantage.
  • Brandeis added insurance in the eighth. Chafin was hit by a pitch and later scored on an RBI single from Kuja before Crowley lifted a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 7-2.
  • The Judges tacked on another run in the ninth, taking advantage of a walk, a stolen base, and a throwing error to make it 8-2.
  • On the mound, Brandeis pitching limited Case Western to just two runs despite allowing ten hits. Sophomore starter John Milewski (Framingham, Mass./Belmont Hill) earned his first win of the season and first of his career, allowing just two earned runs through 5 innings while striking out eight.
  • The bullpen took over from there. Senior Cooper Gavin (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) provided three shutout innings out of the bullpen, working around four hits and striking out four, before sophomore Brady Lane (Hingham, Mass./Boston College High School) retired the side in the ninth to seal the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Brandeis recorded six hits but capitalized on Case Western's errors, scoring eight runs including 5 unearned, with the help of three errors and multiple wild pitches.
  • Chafin led the offense with a triple and two RBI, while Boutsikakis added a double and drove in a run. Kuja finished with two hits and an RBI, and Quill scored twice while reaching base and stealing a bag.
  • Brandeis drew six walks in total and benefited from 2 hit-by-pitches.
  • Despite the split, Brandeis held a 24-9 scoring advantage over Case Western Reserve across the four-game series.
  • The split marks the Judges' first against Case Western since 2019, snapping the Spartans' streak of 13 consecutive UAA series wins, including three straight over Brandeis.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges head to Chicago next weekend to face University of Chicago for their second UAA series, beginning with a game on Friday, Apr. 3rd at 3 p.m.
