Baseball drops two in UAA series at Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Brandeis University baseball team was unable to earn either of the first two wins in UAA action today at the University of Chicago.
TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 9-10, 2-4 UAA.
  • UChicago, 11-10, 4-2 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (UChicago 10, Brandeis 0)
  • UChicago got on the board early in the game, manufacturing a run in the first inning. After a leadoff single and stolen base by Braden Jirovec, a foul out brought him to third, and a sacrifice fly brought him home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
  • The Maroons added another in the second, using a walk and a single to set up an RBI groundout that pushed the advantage to 2-0.
  • The game broke open in the third inning. UChicago strung together three hits and three walks with two outs, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Nathan Bae and an RBI walk, extending the lead to 5-0.
  • The Judges escaped a bases-loaded threat in the fourth, turning a 1-2-3 double play to keep UChicago off the board.
  • However, UChicago continued to apply pressure in the fifth. Ryan Bhojwani delivered an RBI double to right-center, and a wild pitch later in the inning brought home another run, stretching the margin to 7-0.
  • The Maroons put the game out of reach in the seventh, capitalizing on defensive errors and wild pitches. Two runs scored on wild pitches, and Bae capped the scoring with an RBI single as part of a three-run frame that made it 10-0.
  • On the mound, UChicago's pitching staff was dominant throughout. Starter John Butka tossed six shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out five and not issuing a walk. He was backed up by Connor Dong, who closed out the final inning to complete the shutout.
  • Brandeis was limited to five hits on the day, with a double by sophomore Keith Lee (Milford, Mass. / Milford) in the fourth inning marking the team's only extra-base hit. The Judges were unable to generate sustained offense, leaving five runners on base.
  • Junior starter Andrew Tringe (Montpelier, Vt. / Montpelier) took the loss for Brandeis, bringing his season record to 2-3, after allowing five runs over three innings of work. Sophomore Rohan Shah (Hicksville, N.Y. / Hicksville) provided relief, tossing 3.2 innings while giving up five runs (three earned) and striking out three.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME TWO (UChicago 4, Brandeis 2)
  • The Judges and Maroons played a tighter contest in the second game, with runs being scored in only three half-innings.
  • In the top of the third, Lee gave Brandeis its first lead of the game with a two-out single to center with the bases loaded that made it 2-0.
  • Chicago's Max Wiesner drove in an unearned run in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • Wiesner struck again in the fifth, accounting for three more runs. He delivered a two-out, two run double to put UC ahead and scored the game's final run on a double by Harrison Belden.
  • The Judges mounted threats in the sixth and ninth innings, but couldn't push across a run. They left the bases loaded in the sixth, and had two runners in scoring position with one out in the ninth, but Chicago pitchers were able to wriggle out of the jams.
  • Junior Dimitri Skourides (Arlington, Mass./Winchendon School) suffered a second-straight hard-luck UAA loss, allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned) over five innings of work. He struck out two and walked two, falling to 2-2 in the process. Senior Cooper Gavin (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) threw three innings of one-hit relief striking out four.
  • Sophomores Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and junior Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) each had two hits for Brandeis.
  • Matthew Richert got the win for Chicago, while Grant Tenuta earned his first save.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges and Maroons will return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. in Game Three of the four-game series.
