WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team saw its longest winning streak since 2023 come to a halt today as the Judges dropped their 2026 University Athletic Association opener to 23
rd-ranked Emory University, 13-4, at the Bentley University Softball Field.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 9-2, 0-1 UAA.
- Emory, 11-8, 1-0 UAA, ranked #23 in Division III by National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles got off to a fast start by batting around in each of the first two innings, scoring five runs each time.
- In the first, the Judges and starter Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Acad.) suffered from wildness and some tough luck in the first. After retiring the first two Emory hitters, she gave up a hit and three walks to bring in the first run of the game. With the bases still loaded, Emory's Ella Hoyle drove a ball to the left field wall. The Brandeis left field had the ball in her glove, but after colliding with the fence, lost it over the top to give Hoyle a grand slam and the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
- Five hits and two walks in the second doubled the visitors' lead to 10-0.
- Brandeis had a chance to score in the third, but the Emory defense made a pair of terrific plays on first-year Taryn Rainey's (Huntley, Ill. / Huntley) drive to right. The Eagle defender made a diving catch, then a perfect relay to cut down an aggressive Brandeis runner trying to score all way from second to end the inning.
- The Judges broke through in the fourth with runners on the corners. Junior Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) singled, stole second, moved to third on a Jordan Wallace (Howell, N.J. / Choate Rosemary Hall, Conn.) single and scored when a throw to second to try to catch Wallace stealing got away from the infield. Emory followed with a double play on the next batter to avoid further trouble.
- Emory scored three unearned runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 13-1 lead, needing the runs to invoke the eight-run rule, as Brandeis scored three of their own in the bottom of the inning on five hits.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brandeis had 10 hits to 13 for Emory, but the Eagles had three hits that went for extra bases, plus a 6-2 advantage in walks. The Emory defense also turned three double plays on the day.
- Boehmer, Wallace and sophomore Katie Baydian (Massapequa, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Acad.) each had multi-hit games for the Judges.
- Kannan took her first loss of the season, falling 4-1, throwing 1.1 innings, giving up nine runs on seven hits and five walks. She had one strikeout.
- Emory's Mackenzie Duford picked up the win to even her record at 4-4 with 3.2 innings of five-hit ball, walking just one without a K. She pitched the first three innings, then came back in to get the final two outs in the fifth to end the game.
UP NEXT
- The Judges and Eagles will meet for two more games tomorrow starting at noon.
