Softball rallies late in Game 2, but drops UAA doubleheader to #23 Emory

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team dropped the final two games of its University Athletic Association series with #23-ranked Emory today. The Eagles took the opener via the eight-run rule, 15-4, while a Judges' rally fell just short in the finale, 13-10.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 9-4, 0-3 UAA.
  • Emory: 13-8, 3-0 UAA, ranked #23 in Division III by NFCA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE (Emory, 15-4)
  • The offenses came ready to play in the opener, combining for nine runs in the first inning. Emory scored five in the top of the frame, while the Judges answered with four in the bottom.
  • The Eagles' big hits in the stretch were a two-run home run by Ellie Zerr and a two-run double by Ella Hoyle. Brandeis answered with a two-run double by sophomore 3B Jordan Wallace (Lawrenceville, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall, Conn.) and an RBI single by first-year 2B Mia Deck (Laguna Hills, Calif. / Santa Margarita Catholic).
  • The Eagles put together two more big frames during the game, scoring four more in the fourth and six in the fourth before tacking on one in the fifth.
  • Meanwhile, Brandeis left the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, and were unable to generate any further offense the rest of the way, with the Eagles' Lexi Bach allowing just one base-runner in the third that was erased by a double play.
  • Wallace's double was Brandeis's only extra-base hit of the game.
  • Emory was paced by Zerr, who went 5-5 with four RBI and three runs scored, pacing a 17-hit Eagle attack. Hoyle also drove in four runs for the visitors.
  • Bach improved to 2-0 on the season with five innings of five-hit relief after Sydney Thune walked the first two Brandeis hitters. Bach walked four, but kept the Judges at bay.
  • Brandeis sophomore Jamie Staub (Lawrenceville, N.J. / Hun School) took the loss, falling to 3-1, allowing eight hits and eight runs (six earned) in two innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (Emory 13, Brandeis 10)
  • After the teams traded single runs in the first inning of Game Two, Emory scored seven unanswered runs to take an 8-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
  • The Eagles scored one run in the second and three each in the third and sixth, with Zerr adding a two-run double in the sixth.
  • Brandeis first-year Dylan Yamamura (Newbury Park, Calif. / Newbury Park) added a double in the sixth, but the Judges left two runners in scoring position.
  • The Eagles looked like they took control in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs on five hits and an error, with a bases loaded triple by Makaila Hope the big blow of the frame.
  • Trailing 13-2 into their final at-bat, the Judges didn't go quietly, scoring eight runs of their own on seven hits and two walks in the seventh. First-year Mary Doud (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge), senior Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif / San Juan Hills) and first-year Taryn Rainey (Huntley, Ill. / Huntley) each had two-run doubles in the inning.
  • Rainey's two-bagger came with two outs, but she was caught over-running second to end the game.
  • Emory's Zerr continued her hot hitting in the second game, finishing 3-5 with three RBI and three runs scored and a double.
  • Brandeis had 13 hits, including five doubles in the game. Senior Erin Hunt (Wake Forest, N.C. / Franklin Academy), Wallace, Manes and Deck each had two hits for the Judges, while Rainey, Manes and Doud all had two RBI.
  • First-year Madeline Jennings (New York, N.Y. / Beacon) fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing nine hits and five runs over 2.2 innings. She was one of three Judges pitchers in the game.
  • Emory's Greta Uhlman improved to 2-1 with 5.1 innings of five-hit ball, allowing one unearned run. She struck out three without a walk.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges are slated to host Suffolk University on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
