Baseball edged by Wentworth, 7-6

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Brandeis and Wentworth baseball teams traded blows in the early innings, but a terrific individual performance at the plate and lock-down relief helped the Leopards take a 7-6 win in a contest played at Sol Gittleman Field at Tufts University.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 7-4.
  • Wentworth, 8-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges, who dropped their third one-run game in the last four contests, fell victim to a monster game from Wentworth 2B Josh Turcotte, who went 4-5 with five RBI, two runs scored, two home runs and a double.
  • Turcotte's first blast was a two-run shot in the top of the first that gave the Leopards a 3-0 lead.
  • Brandeis cut into the lead with single runs in the first three innings. Junior Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) had an RBI double in the first, and classmate Matt Chafin (Canton, Mass. / Canton) singled home a run in the second to make it 3-2.
  • Wentworth added a run in the top of the third on an RBI by Matt Robinson.
  • The Judges got the run back in the bottom of the third on another RBI hit by Chafin, then took the lead with a three-run fourth.
  • In the fourth, the Judges loaded the bases with one out on a single by first-year SS Noah Koong (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake) and two walks.
  • With one away, Aronwald delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home Koong and tie the game at 4. After a hit batter, sophomore catcher Keith Lee (Milford, Mass./Milford) delivered a two-run single on an 0-2 pitch.
  • With runners on first and second and two away, the Judges got aggressive on the basepath and went for a double-steal, but the Leopards got a batter's interference call on the throw to third to get out of the inning.
  • Wentworth took advantage in the top of the fifth, putting runners on with a hit batter and a single, bringing up Turcotte, who blasted his second homer of the game and third of the season on a 1-0 pitch to put the visitors back on top, 7-6.
  • The Wentworth bullpen took over from there, with four pitchers closing things out. They stranded two Brandeis runners in scoring position in the fifth, then got through the next four innings allowing just two baserunners, one of whom was erased on a double play.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The two teams each had 11 hits, with Brandeis drawing six walks to four for the Leopards.
  • Aronwald, Lee and Chafin each had two hits and two RBI, with Aronwald, Lee and junior 3B Mano Boutsikakis (Astoria, N.Y. / Xavier) each hitting a double.
  • Grad student Jacob Maurer (Dayton, Ohio / Archbishop Carroll) suffered the loss for the Judges, allowing six hits and four earned runs over 4.1 innings of work. He struck out five and walked one and saw his record even at 1-1.
  • Wentworth's Chase Carder earned the win with a scoreless fifth inning, working around a hit and a walk. He improved to 2-0.
  • Bennett Leary worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth for his fifth save.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges head to New London, Conn., on Saturday for a doubleheader at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
