#23 women's tennis downs #38 Colby, 6-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – The 23rd-ranked Brandeis University women's tennis team improved to 6-3 on the season Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over #38 Colby College as the Judges won seven of nine matches.

  • Brandeis: 6-3, ranked #23 in Division III.
  • Colby: 1-3, ranked #38 in Division III.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brandeis opened the match by securing the doubles point. The senior-junior duo of Rebecca Suarez (New York, N.Y. / International Virtual Learning Academy) and Mandy Reyes (Manila, Philippines / Laurel Springs School) struck first with a 6-2 victory at the top flight.
  • Colby earned its lone doubles win at the #3 position with a 7-5 victory.
  • The point was clinched at #2 doubles, where first-year Avani Chitale (Ahmedabad, India / Cosmos Castle International School) and junior Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India / Aavishkar School) outlasted their opponents in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5). 
  • In singles play, the Judges were dominant, winning five matches, including two that went the distance.
  • Reyes cruised at #1 singles, earning a 6-2, 6-0 win to open the singles scoring
  • First-year Galia Harmelin (Seattle, Wash. / Westwood) followed with a clinical 6-3, 6-0 win at #6 singles.
  • Budhbhatti bounced back from a second-set tiebreaker loss to dominate the third set in a 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 6-0 victory at the #2 spot and clinch the match victory.
  • Sophomore Charly Saltz (Los Angeles, Calif. / Learning Post Academy) won in straight sets at #5, 6-1, 6-4.
  • The match of the day occurred at #3 singles, where Chitale survived a marathon battle. After splitting the first two sets, 7-6 (7-5) and 5-7, Chitale outlasted her opponent 15-13 in a third-set tiebreaker.
  • Colby's only point in singles came at the #4 flight, where first-year Milana Sofizade (Sarasota, Fla. / IMG Academy) fell in two tight sets, 6-4, 7-5.
