HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Judges secured the critical doubles point by sweeping all three matches in tightly contested sets. The junior duo of Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India / Aavishkar School) and Charly Saltz (Los Angeles, Calif. / Learning Post Academy) provided the first win with a 6-4 victory at the #3 spot.
- Brandeis then clinched the point with identical 7-5 wins at the top two flights. First-year Milana Sofizade (Sarasota, Fla. / IMG Academy) and senior Nancy Zhang (Shanghai, China / Shanghai International Division) held off their opponents at #2, while senior Rebecca Suarez (New York, N.Y. / International Virtual Learning Academy) and junior Mandy Reyes (Manila, Philippines / Laurel Springs School) outlasted the Bulldogs' top pair at #1.
- Singles play saw the two nationally-ranked teams trade blows throughout the afternoon. Redlands tied things up when Suarez had to retire five games into the first set with an injury. Sofizade got Brandeis singles on the board with a dominant 6-0, 6-4 win at the #6 position.
- The Bulldogs earned wins at #2 and #4 to take a 3-2 lead with two matches left.
- Budhbhatti provided a massive comeback at the #3 spot; after dropping the first set 6-4, she stormed back to win 12 of the final 14 games for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory. The match eventually came down to the #5 singles flight, where Saltz displayed incredible resilience. After split sets, Saltz battled to earn a late break of serve in the third to secure a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory, clinching the fourth and deciding point for the Judges.
