Baseball wraps Southern swing with big wins over VTSU-Castleton and CCNY

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Brandeis University baseball team concluded its February Break trip to Florida with a pair of big wins on Friday. The Judges opened with a 15-9 win that spoiled the debut of Vermont State-Castleton coach and Brandeis alumnus Tony Deshler '11, then completed a three-game sweep of CCNY, 15-2.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 4-0.
  • VTSU-Castleton: 0-1.
  • CCNY: 0-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs VERMONT STATE-CASTLETON (Brandeis 15, VTSU-Castleton 9)
  • Brandeis junior captain Andrew Tringe (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) got off to a great start. After allowing hits to the first two batters he faced, Tringe retired the next 12 Spartan batters in a row, eight coming by strikeout.
  • The Judges broke the ice with two runs in the third inning, coming on a single by junior 2B Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) and a two-run double by sophomore 1B Danny Tambascia (Newton, Mass./Newton North).
  • Brandeis took advantage of Vermont State wildness to score five runs on just two hits in the fifth, with five walks and two hit batters. First-year SS Noah Koong (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake) delivered a two-run single in the frame.
  • VTSU got those five runs back in the bottom of the fifth, chasing Tringe after he allowed two walks. The Spartans loaded the bases and scored on a single, then got a grand slam by Justin Strozyk.
  • The Judges left the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh, but scored twice in the eighth on a two-run single by sophomore Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and five more in the ninth.
  • VSTU answered with one of their own in the seventh and three in the sixth for the 15-9 final.
  • The Judges pounded out 14 hits, drew 11 walks and were hit by seven pitches – including three by sophomore catcher Keith Lee (Milford, Mass./Milford). Eight of nine Brandeis starters scored runs and eight had hits in the game.
  • Koong, Kuja, Tambascia and junior Matt Chafin (Canton, Mass./Canton) led the way with three RBI, while junior 3B Mano Boutsikakis (Astoria, N.Y./Xavier) had a team-high three hits.
  • Tringe threw 4.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
  • First-year Jackson Herzog (New York, N.Y./Dalton School) allowed one unearned run, allowing a walk and a hit batter, and earned the win in relief, the first of his career.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS CCNY (Brandeis 15, CCNY 2, 7 innings)
  • The Judges wasted no time jumping on CCNY, as 16 men came to the plate, leading to 10 runs on just three hits. CCNY issued five walks and hit two batters while committing two errors. Koong and Chafin had the only two RBI hits in the frame.
  • Koong then tripled and scored in the second, while sophomore Bobby Quill (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) singled and scored on a three-base error to give the Judges a 12-0 lead.
  • Tambascia tripled and scored as part of the three-run third that put the Judges ahead, 15-0, before CCNY scored twice in their final at-bat.
  • A pair of grad transfers kept the Beavers in check on the hill.
  • Jacob Maurer (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Carroll) earned the win with five innings of four-hit ball. He struck out 10 without walking a batter.
  • Malcolm Hsu (Cupertino, Calif./St. Francis), who played at UMass Dartmouth and Wesleyan, struck out three and walked one in an inning-and-a-third.
  • Sophomore Nick Hart-Nibbrig (Winchester, Mass./Belmont Hill) closed things out with the final two-third of an inning.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges' next scheduled game is on March 1 at Mitchell College in Connecticut.
