#23 women's tennis suffers first defeat of season at #5 CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The 23rd-ranked Brandeis University women's tennis team closed out its challenging West Coast road trip today with a hard-fought match against #5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Despite several competitive performances across the lineup, the Judges fell to the top-five Athenas, 7-0.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 3-1, ranked #23 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
  • Claremont-Mudd-Scripps: 2-1, ranked #5 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges faced a formidable challenge in doubles play against a deep CMS roster. At the #2 position, junior Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India / Aavishkar School) and first-year Milana Sofizade (Sarasota, Fla. / IMG Academy) battled through several tight games before falling 6-3. The #3 duo of first-year Galia Harmelin (Seattle, Wash. / University Prep) and sophomore Charly Saltz (Los Angeles, Calif. / Learning Post Academy) matched that score, also falling 6-3 in another competitive set.
  • In singles action, the Judges continued to push the top-ranked Athenas in several extended sets. Saltz provided the most competitive match of the evening at the #4 spot, nearly taking the first set before dropping a narrow 7-5, 6-4 decision to Bell Zhou.
  • At the top of the flight, senior Rebecca Suarez (New York, N.Y. / International Virtual Learning Academy) held her own in the first set against defending national champion Lindsay Eisenman, battling to a 6-4 opening set before withdrawing in the second set, down 2-1. +1

UP NEXT
  • The Judges return to action on Feb. 22 with a make-up match against the University of Redlands.
