#23 women's tennis moves to 3-0 with 5-2 win at Occidental

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The 23rd-ranked Brandeis women's tennis team continued their spring schedule in California today, picking up a 5-2 victory over host Occidental College. With the win, the Judges move to 3-0 on the season.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 3-0, ranked #23 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
  • Occidental: 1-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Judges set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. Junior Charly Saltz (Los Angeles, Calif. / Learning Post Academy) and first-year Galia Harmelin (Seattle, Wash. / University Prep) were the first off the court with a 6-3 win at #3 doubles. They were followed by junior Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India / Aavishkar School) and first-year Milana Sofizade (Sarasota, Fla. / IMG Academy), who secured a 6-4 victory at the #2 spot. Senior Rebecca Suarez (New York, N.Y. / International Virtual Learning Academy) and junior Mandy Reyes (Manila, Philippines / Laurel Springs School) completed the doubles sweep with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-3) win at the top flight.

Brandeis maintained control in singles play by winning four of the six matches. Budhbhatti earned the team's second point with a efficient 6-2, 6-2 win at #3. Reyes followed at the #2 spot with a 6-1, 7-5 victory to bring the Judges within one point of the clinch. Sofizade remained undefeated on the dual-match season, contributing a 6-3, 6-3 win at #5 , while Saltz provided the final margin of victory for the Judges with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the #4 position.

The Tigers earned their two points at the #1 and #6 positions. At the top of the lineup, Suarez fell to Occidental's Greta Nagy, withdrawing due to injury after the first game of the match. In the final match of the day at #6, Harmelin dropped a close three-set battle, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
