DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Brandeis University baseball team picked up its second win by scoring in double digits today as the Judges defeated CCNY, 10-4, at the Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Florida, as part of their February Break trip south.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 2-0.
- CCNY, 0-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After three scoreless innings, the Judges broke the ice in the fourth. Sophomore LF Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) led off the frame with a triple, then tagged and came home after the Beavers' first-baseman made a catch in foul territory.
- After sophomore John Milewski (Framingham, Mass. / Belmont Hill) worked around some trouble in the first four frames, CCNY scored their first runs off the Judges in the fifth.
- Milewski surrendered a lead-off double, with the runner advancing to third on a passed ball. Milewski got the next two batters on strikeouts, but after a walk put runners on the corners, the Beavers scored twice against sophomore Rohan Shah (Hicksville, N.Y. / Hicksville) without a hit.
- Sophomore Brady Lane (Hingham, Mass. / Boston College High School) came on and got a called third strike to leave the bases loaded.
- Brandeis went back on top for good in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI double by sophomore Danny Tambascia (Newton, Mass. / Newton North) and a single by junior Mano Boutsikakis (Astoria, N.Y. / Xavier) made it 3-2.
- The Judges blew things open with a six-run seventh inning, needing just three hits to do it. Junior Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass. / Arlington) singled home a run, then classmate Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y. / Trinity Pawling) delivered a two-run triple. Tambascia followed with a run-scoring three-bagger of his own.
- Brandeis added its 10th run in the eighth when sophomore Bobby Quill (Raynham, Mass. / Bridgewater-Raynham Reg.) doubled, stole third and came home when the throw sailed into left field.
- CCNY plated two runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run home run, their first of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Five of Brandeis's nine hits went for extra bases, with two doubles and three triples.
- Aronwald paced the offense with three RBI, and four different Judges scored two runs, including Quill, who went 2-3 with two runs scored, a double and three stolen bases.
- Lane earned the win in relief, going 2.1 innings and striking out four of the eight batters he faced and giving up just one hit. It was his first collegiate win in four decisions.
- Milewski went 4.2 innings and allowed three hits and two earned runs, striking out five and walking two.
