Judges roll past CCNY in season opener, 13-0

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Brandeis University baseball team rolled past the City College of New York (CCNY) in the spring opener for both teams at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Florida, as part of the RussMatt Invitational.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 1-0.
  • CCNY, 0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges were led by a tremendous pitching performance from junior Dimitri Skourides (Arlington, Mass. / Winchendon School) and first-year Jackson Herzog (New York, N.Y. / Dalton School), who combined to hold the Beavers to one it over seven innings. They struck out 10 of the 25 batters they faced, walking three.
  • Skourides threw the first five innings, holding CCNY hitless with eight Ks and two walks to earn his first collegiate win. It was his first appearance since the 2024 season and just his fourth career start.
  • Herzog had two strikeouts and a walk in the last two frames.
  • Offensively, the Judges got all the scoring they would need in the bottom of the first, when a grounder to second by sophomore 3B Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) plated junior CF Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn. / Notre Dame-West Haven), who was hit by a pitch, moved up on a grounder and stole third.
  • Kuja scored three batters later on a sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher Keith Lee (Milford, Mass. / Milford) to make it 2-0.
  • Brandeis blew things open with a five-run second that include a two-run double by Kuja and runs scoring on a wild pitch, an error and a ground out.
  • The Judges sent 10 players to the plate in a six-run fourth inning, scoring six times on seven hits. Highlights were an RBI triple by junior 2B Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass. / Arlington) and a two-run home run by Lee. It was his first of the season and the fifth of his career.
  • Junior LF Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y. / Trinity Pawling) had the lone multi-hit game for the Judges, while Kuja led the team with three RBI. Crowley scored three runs and stole two bases out of the leadoff spot.
UP NEXT
  • Brandeis and CCNY will meet for the second of three games tomorrow at noon.
