Judges rally but fall short in UAA opener to WashU, 3-2

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team rallied late in the second half, but Washington University in St. Louis held on for a 3-2 victory over the Judges on Saturday afternoon in Brandeis' University Athletic Association opener and annual Homecoming game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis opened the scoring just over a minute into the match when junior Jacob Morse (Framingham, Mass./St.George's School (R.I.)) found the back of the net with a low shot, giving the Judges an early 1-0 lead.
  • WashU answered in the 32nd minute when Ethan Wirtschafter scored on an assist from Henry Wong-Foy to level the match at 1-1.
  • The Bears took their first lead in the 38th minute when Wong-Foy scored on assists from Colin Link and Casper Leary, sending WashU into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
  • The Bears extended their lead early in the second half when Nick Lam scored in the 59th minute off an assist from Wong-Foy, making it a 3-1 game.
  • The Judges continued to pressure the Bears' defense throughout the final 30 minutes. Brandeis generated several scoring chances late, including two shots from senior Keller Chamovitz (Sewickly, Pa./Quaker Valley) in the final five minutes.
  • Senior Aidan Chuang (New York, N.Y./Milton Acad.) finally broke through in the 89th minute, finishing a low shot to the left side after senior Maddox Yu's (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) corner kick sparked a scramble in the box to cut the deficit to 3-2.
  • Brandeis continued to push in the final minute, but the Judges were unable to generate another scoring chance as WashU held on for the 3-2 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • WashU outshot Brandeis, 16-13, and held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Judges earned 12 corner kicks compared to 10 for the Bears.
  • Brandeis first-year goalkeeper Gianni Nrecaj (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) made four saves, while WashU goalkeeper Cal L'Hommedieu stopped two shots for WashU.
  • Chamovitz led the Judges with six shots and two shots on goal, and Chuang and Morse's goals were both their third of the season.
