ATLANTA, Ga. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team led for the first two-thirds of the game today, but an unfortunate red card gave host Emory the upper hand, and the Eagles scored three unanswered goals for a 3-1 University Athletic Association win in a contest delayed a day because of the weather in Atlanta.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 3-6-2, 0-2-0 UAA.
- Emory, 9-1-2, 2-0-0 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams were fairly even in the first half, with each taking eight shots.
- Only two were on goal, both for the Judges, who struck first in the 38th minute. Senior Maddox Yu (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) delivered a corner into the box from the left side, and first-year back Jack Rossiter (Watertown, Mass./BB&N) headed it home for his first collegiate goal.
- With just under a half and hour left in the contest, the Judges were called for a red card when the referee determined that a Brandeis defender intentionally used his arm to prevent a goal.
- While the Judges were fortunate that Emory's ensuing PK went well wide to the left of the net, the Eagles tied things up just 93 seconds later.
- In the 76th minute, Emory took the lead for good when the player who missed the penalty stayed just onside and buried a goal past Brandeis first-year Gianni Nrecaj (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.
- The Eagles tacked on an insurance goal in the 84th minute to secure the win.
- Nrecaj made two saves for the Judges, both coming after the team was down to 10 men.
- Brandeis was whistled for twice as many fouls as Emory and four cards to three for the Eagles.
UP NEXT
- The Judges will close out their non-conference slate on Tuesday evening against Massachusetts Maritime Academy at 7:30 p.m.
