Late Mbugua goal gives Wellesley the blues, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. (courtesy Wellesley College sports information) -- Brandeis University junior Lacey Mbugua (Brockton, Mass./Worcester Academy) scored a goal with less than eight minutes to go in regulation today to give the Judges a 2-1 victory at local rivals Wellesley College.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 3-0-1.
  • Wellesley, 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With time running down in a 1-1 affair, Mbugua took advantage of a chaotic scramble in the box, set up by a ball redirected from senior Sam Kipperman (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug). Mbugua gathered the ball and knocked in a goal to give the Judges a 2-1 edge.
  • The goal was her first of the season and the second of her career. Mbugua has scored a point in three of the Judges' four contests in 2025.
  • Earlier in the game, the visitors got on the board 25:19 into the first half. Sophomore Katie Collins (Littleton, Mass./Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School) received a corner kick from classmate Laurene Creteau (Madison, N.J./Madison) and tucked a shot in the low center part of the goal.
  • Collins' goal was her first of the season. The Judges have had eight different goal scorers on their nine goals this season.
  • Only 36 seconds later at the 25:51 mark, Wellesley erased its deficit. Sophomore Solveig Unterberdoerster dribbled into the upper left side of the box and curled in a shot past Brandeis' keeper in the right hand side of the goal.
  • Wellesley goalie Riley McNair made several athletic stops and tallied 12 saves. Sophomore Penny Alston (New York, N.Y./East Side Community) made three saves in the opening half for Brandeis while junior Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside) kept a clean sheet in the back 45 minutes
UP NEXT
  • Each team will next compete in a road game at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 10. The Blue take on UMass Boston while the Judges play at Clark University.
