Women sink RIC Anchorwomen, 2-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis women's soccer team scored late in the first half and early in the second today as the Judges extended their unbeaten streak to three in a row with a 2-0 win over Rhode Island College on Gordon Field.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 2-0-1.
  • Rhode Island College, 2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis controlled play in the first half, outshooting RIC, 13-3.
  • The Judges finally broke through with just under three minutes left in the stanza. Junior Lacey Mbugua (Brockton, Mass./Worcester Academy) dribbled through traffic and crossed the ball from the top of the box to the left side.
  • Senior Madison Sansone (Westport, Conn./Staples), who had entered the game just a minute before, was there to beat RIC keeper Oceanna Orlandi  inside the near post in the 43rd minute.
  • The goal was Sansone's first of the season and the third of her career.
  • In the 53rd minute, the Judges got an insurance goal. Junior midfielder Ali Pennella (Stamford, Conn./Greenwich) made a long run and was pulled down just at the top of arc at the top of the 18-yard box.
  • First-year Moira Koleno (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) took the free kick and put it around the Anchorwomen's wall in inside the left post past a diving Orlandi.
  • The goal was the first of Koleno's collegiate career, and provided all the scoring the Judges would need.
