Corners are key as #19 Judges knock off #6 MIT, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team scored two goals off corner kicks today and the 19th-ranked Judges remained unbeaten, upsetting 6th-ranked MIT, 2-1, on Gordon Field.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 5-0-1, ranked #19 in United Soccer Coaches Division III National Poll.
  • MIT, 5-1-0, ranked #6 by United Soccer Coaches in Division III.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges broke the ice early on this one, scoring just under four minutes into the contest. A corner by first-year Moira Koleno (Chicago, Ill. / Whitney M. Young Magnet) went into a scramble in the box. Sophomore Katie Collins (Littleton, Mass. / Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School) played the ball forward and junior Lacey Mbugua (Brockton, Mass./Worcester Acad.) sent it towards the goal-line. First-year Grace Carman (Chicago, Ill. / Lane Tech) was there to finish the job, converting her first collegiate goal.
  • MIT got an equalizer in the 19th minute off a free kick from about 30 yards out. Sean Luk played a ball over the top into the 18-yard box, and Natalie Barnouw volleyed it home for her fifth goal of the season.
  • MIT outshot Brandeis, 10-4, in the first half, but Judge junior Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside) had two saves to keep the game even.
  • The game-winning goal came in the 65th minute, off another corner. From the left side, Koleno's service was cleared off the goal line by an MIT defender, but junior midfielder Zareena Mann (San Ramon, Calif. / California) was right on the deflection, heading it home.
  • The goal was Mann's first of the season and the second of her career. It proved to be her first career game-winner.
  • The Judges nearly got a cushion on an attempt by junior Abby Kenkelen (Philadelphia, Pa. / Springside Chestnut Hill) a minute later, but MIT's Maddy Noll made a nice save.
  • MIT had three shots after falling behind, but Logan made two saves to hang on for the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • MIT outshot Brandeis, 19-8, for the game, but Logan's career-high seven saves helped the Judges maintain the scoring advantage.
  • Ava Muffoletto did not have any saves for MIT in the first half, while Noll had two for the Engineers in the second.
  • This was the 44th meeting between Brandeis and MIT, the second-most-played rivalry in Judges' history.
  • Brandeis snapped a six-match winless streak against the Engineers (0-4-2) but improved to 25-14-5 all-time.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges are on the road on Wednesday, September 17, at Johnson and Wales (R.I.) for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
