Four find the back of the net for #12 women in 4-1 win at JWU

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 12th-ranked Brandeis women's soccer team got goals from four different players as they extended their unbeaten streak to seven tonight with a convincing 4-1 win at Johnson and Wales University.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 6-0-1, ranked #12 in Division III by United Soccer Coaches.
  • JWU, 2-3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges dominated possession in this one, outshooting Johnson and Wales, 20-7, including 9-3 in shots on goal.
  • Brandeis got the only goal of the first half in the 17th minute. A nice long ball down the right flank by grad student Ellie Tyska (Hudson, Mass./Wayland) set up a cross from first-year Grace Carman (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) at the edge of the 18-yard box. Junior Lacey Mbugua (Brockton, Mass./Worcester Academy) was there to chip  the ball over the outstretched arm of JWU goalkeeper Ava Vaughan. The goal was Mbugua's second of the season.
  • Brandeis exploded for three more goals in the final 15 minutes of action. In the 76th minute, the game-winner came from senior Sam Kipperman (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug). After nice long ball from the back by junior goalkeeper Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside), sophomore Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy Charter School) connected with Mbugua in the middle of the field. Mbugua crossed to Kipperman on the right edge of the 18, and she blasted it home for her team-leading third goal of the season.
  • In the 79th minute, the Judges added some insurance when Tyska was pulled down in the box. Senior back Caroline Alcock (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) calmly converted the ensuing PK into the left netting for her second goal of the season.
  • Junior back Zareena Mann (San Ramon, Calif./California) scored for the second game in a row, heading home a corner by sophomore Laurene Creteau (Madison, N.J./Madison) to round out the Brandeis scoring in the 83rd minute.
  • The Wildcats spoiled Logan's shutout bid in the 87th minute, when Chloe Casavant scored her second goal of the season.
  • Logan earned the win with two saves, one in each half. JWU's Vaughan made four saves in the first half, while Kyla Stamilio took the loss after allowing three goals with one save in the second.
  • Brandeis's 6-0-1 start to the season is their best under current head coach Mary Shimko '14 and their best since 2018.
UP NEXT
  • Brandeis is off until next Wednesday, Sept. 24, when they face Lesley University at home at 7 p.m. in the second half of a doubleheader with the men.
