CLEVELAND, Ohio – Brandeis University track and field first-year
Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy Charter School) finished in 10
th place today in the 400-meter run at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, earning the second second-team All-America honor of her career.
Leroy, running in the third and final heat, had a terrific charge over the final 100 meters of the race to make it interesting, but she was edged at the end for the win by Shalom Sunlungaine of Bethel (Minn.) and the automatic spot in the finals. Leroy was second in her heat with a time of 55.43 seconds, but was 0.13 seconds behind MIT's Marina Miller for the ninth and final spot to qualify for tomorrow's finals. Her time was her third-fastest of the outdoor season, behind a 55.36 and 54.11.
Leroy was seeded fourth in the event, but her heat was the slowest of the three. She was one of three first-years in the race, finishing only behind Ariella Rogahn-Press of Macalaster, the second seed who had the fastest time of the day. Leroy improved four spots from her finish at the indoor championships, when she finished in 14
th place and earned her first career All-America honor.
"I am extremely proud of Peterly. She has made tremendous progress," said head coach
Miles Ketchum. "She still has so much to learn and accomplish. She is due for some well-deserved rest, but I know this year will fuel and motivate her when she starts to put in the work for next year. I am already looking forward to what she can as a sophomore."
Brandeis will be represented by first-year
Sarai Sealy (New York, N.Y./Ursuline School) tomorrow in the triple jump.
