WORCESTER, Mass. - The Brandeis University softball team picked up a doubleheader split today against WPI. Judge first-year Jordan Wallace (Howell, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall, Conn.) had two home runs in game 1, as the Judges won, 8-4. The Engineers bounced back to outslug the Judges, 10-4, in game 2.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (Brandeis 8, WPI 4)
- The Engineers broke through first, as junior Emma Nagy homered to left field to start the second inning.
- Brandeis came right back in the top of the third inning as junior Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) singled up the middle, scoring one run. Wallace's second home run of the season came next, driving in three and bringing the score to 4-1.
- Capitalizing on three errors by the Judges, WPI was able to score two runs in the bottom of the third inning to close within 4-3.
- In the top of the fourth inning, sophomore Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) had a solo homer to right field, her second of the season. Keeping up the momentum, Burdenski doubled down the line to drive in another run. Wallace added another two-run home run to finish the inning at 8-3.
- With no action in the fifth and sixth inning, the engineers tried to come back when first-year Lucy Latour singled to right field, scoring a run and putting another in scoring position at second base. With bases loaded and two outs, the Judges were able to get out of it with a lineout to Burdenski in center field.
- Junior pitcher Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) threw her third complete game in her last four appearances, evening her record at 3-3 on the season. She gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits, walking three and striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (WPI 10, Brandeis 5)
- Brandeis started strong at the start of the game, capitalizing on WPI's two errors scoring a run on no hits in the top of the first.
- The Engineers quickly rallied. After a hit by pitch and a wild pitch, sophomore Virginia McKinney hit a triple down the right field line, scoring the first run. A walk and a single to right field scored another run.
- After a pitching change brought grad student Kathryn Vermeulen (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) for first-year Jamie Staub (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hun School), WPI put runners on second and third, and sophomore Riley O'Brien followed with a three-run home run, bringing the score to 5-1.
- WPI kept the momentum going into the second inning when two singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. A routine ground ball to third base advanced the runners, and one run scored in the inning, 6-1.
- At the bottom of the third, the Engineers had a single, a double, a hit batter and a walk to score three more runs on just two hits, making it 9-1.
- The Judges started to come back in the top of the fourth inning with sophomore Katie Baydian's (Massapequa, N.Y./Our Lady of the Savior Acad.) bases-loaded walk bringing in the first run of the inning.
- Boehmer singled scoring a run and junior Erin Hunt (Wake Forest, N.C./Franklin Acad.) scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 9-4.
- WPI took back a run with a walk and double from O'Brien, scoring one run on one hit in the fifth, pushing the lead back to 10-4.
- With a last chance to score in the top of the seventh inning, a walk and a sacrifice fly out to right field advanced the runner to third base. A single from Budenski scored the run finishing the game 10-5 WPI.
- Staub took the loss, falling to 1-5 on the season.
