TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 6-19-1, 2-6 UAA.
- Carnegie Mellon, 11-13, 4-4 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (Carnegie Mellon 1, Brandeis 0)
- The opener was a classic pitcher's duel between Brandeis junior Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) and Carnegie Mellon first-year Gianna Adams.
- The teams managed just six hits between them, as only two runners made it past second base in the first six innings.
- The Tartans broke through in the top of the seventh, when Kiera Boucher was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and stole second base.
- Boucher moved to third when Kannan got a comebacker to the circle and scored the game's only run on a single to center by Libby Eichelberger.
- Adams retired the Judges in order in the seventh to complete the two-hit shutout. She struck out seven without a walk, facing just two batters over the minimum, to improve to 5-3 on the season.
- Kannan suffered the loss, falling to 3-4. She allowed just four hits and the one earned run, striking out a season-high eight and walking two with a hit batter.
- Both of Brandeis's hits came from sophomore Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) against the opponent form her hometown.
- Eichberger had two of CMU's four hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (CMU 6, Brandeis 1)
- The Tartans' Haley Pucci continued to keep the Brandeis bats in check in Game 2, as she scattered four hits over seven innings to improve to 3-5. She struck out eight and worked around seven walks as the Judges stranded 10 runners.
- Brandeis starter Jamie Staub (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hun School) took the loss, falling to 1-6. She allowed four runs (three earned) in four innings of work. She gave up five hits and four walks, striking out three. Grad student Kathryn Vermeulen (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) tossed the final three frames and gave up five hits and two unearned runs, striking out three.
- Carnegie Mellon got all the scoring they would need in the first inning when Abby Reese drove in two runs on a single to right before getting thrown out trying to take an extra base.
- The Tartans added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI by Koko Sagae and Eichberger, while Reese and Boucher each drove in two in the seventh to give the visitors a 6-0 lead.
- Brandeis finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh, when sophomore SS Katie Baydian (Massapequa, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Acad.) singled home a run to spoil Pucci's shutout bid.
- CMU's Reese led all players by going 3-4 with three RBI, while Brandeis junior Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) had the game's only extra-base hit of the day, a double.
