Baseball drops slugfest to #21 CWRU, 25-18

WALTHAM, Mass. – It took more than four hours and playing through on-and-off rain, but the Brandeis University baseball team dropped a record-breaking University Athletic Association contest with #21-ranked Case Western Reserve today, 25-18, at Waltham's Yetten Field.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 11-26, 3-16 UAA.
  • CWRU: 24-12-1, 13-5-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Runs scored in all but three half-innings, with the visiting Spartans scoring at least once in each frame.
  • The teams set four UAA records in the process – combined runs in a game (43), combined extra-base hits in a game (16), combined runs in an inning (15, in the 7th) and extra-base hits in a game by one team (12 by CWRU).
  • The teams each scored a run in the first, and after the Spartans scored four in the top of the second, the Judges responded with three in the bottom of the frame to get within 5-4.
  • CWRU scored six straight runs in their next three at-bats to go ahead, 11-4, after the top of the fifth
  • Brandeis scored twice in the bottom to cut it to 11-6, but CWRU answered with a run in the sixth that pushed their lead to 12-6, and the looked to put the game away in the top of the seventh, when they scored nine runs on six hits and three walks to go up, 21-6.
  • Rather than succumb to the UAA's 10-run rule, Brandeis battled for six runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh, to get within 21-12 and extending the game.
  • The Spartans tallied one in the top of the eighth to go back up by 10, 22-12, but this time the Judges responded with five in the bottom of the inning to get within 22-17.
  • CWRU scored three in the top of the ninth, and Brandeis managed just one in the bottom of the frame for the 25-18 final.
  • The win by the Spartans, coupled with Chicago's loss to NYU today, gave Case Western Reserve the UAA title and an NCAA Division III tournament berth.
