Softball tests #12 WashU in game two, but falls twice in UAA play

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Brandeis University softball team battled late in the second game of a doubleheader, but the Judges couldn't prevent a sweep at the hands of 12th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis. The Bears won the opener of the University Athletic Association doubleheader, 7-1, then walked off with the second game, 5-4.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 7-22-1, 3-9 UAA.
  • WashU: 26-5, 11-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (WashU 7, Brandeis 1)
  • WashU scored runs in five of its six at-bats, while limiting the Judges to just one run in the top of the fifth inning.
  • The Bears' first three runs scored on plays that weren't hits, getting a sacrifice fly from Natalia Pilpil in the first and a successful double steal of home by Julia Nicholus followed by a squeeze play that scored Maggie Baumstark in the second.
  • WashU's Alex Hanish doubled home a run in the fourth to make it 4-0.
  • Brandeis spoiled the shutout bid by the Bears in the fifth when senior 2B Anna Kolb (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) homered to left-center field.
  • The homer was Kolb's second of the season and the sixth of her career.
  • Hanish got her second RBI of the day in the bottom of the fifth, and Pilpil homered in the sixth with one aboard to close out the scoring, 7-1.
  • Kolb was Brandeis's only multiple hitter, going 2-3 with a double in addition to her home run.
  • Grad student Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) added a double.
  • Hanish and Pilpil combined to drive in five of WashU's seven runs, and Hanish and Nicholus were the only multiple hitters for the Bears with two each.
  • Jamie Burgasser improved to 11-1 for WashU, limiting Brandeis to six hits and one run over seven innings. She struck out eight and walked three.
  • Junior Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) fell to 3-5. She allowed five hits and three earned runs in two innings of work. She walked two with no strikeouts. Grad student Kathryn Vermeulen (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) threw the last four innings, giving up six hits and four earned runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (WashU 5, Brandeis 4)
  • Kolb got the Judges off to a faster start in game 2, delivering a two-run double in the top of the first.
  • Pilpil got those two runs back in the bottom of the frame with her second home run of the day, a two-run blast.
  • The Judges went back on top in the fourth thanks to an RBI single up the middle by first-year catcher Dylan Yamamura (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park).
  • WashU answered the Judges again, with Baumstark and Brooke Capparelli each delivering RBI singles to put the host ahead, 4-3.
  • Brandeis squandered an opportunity to reclaim the lead in the top of the fifth when the loaded the bases with nobody out on a single by junior Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif./San Juan Hills), a double by sophomore Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and error that allowed Nash to reach safely.
  • WashU reliever Maria Brooks wriggled out of trouble with two comebackers to the circle and a pop-up to the catcher.
  • The Judges tied the game in the top of the seventh, when Manes delivered her third hit of the game, and Kolb singled two batters later to put runners at first and second.
  • Junior Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) followed with a slow grounder to shortstop. Kolb beat the throw to second, and pinch-runner Mary Doud (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) never stopped running, scoring the tying run all the way from second on the play.
  • Unfortunately for the Judges, WashU was able to score the winning run in the bottom of the frame. The Bears coaxed a pair of walks to start the inning, and Sydney Schneider was safe on a bunt to first base. Kennedy Grippo then delivered a fly to center that allowed pinch runner Kristina Donaldson to tag and score the walk-off run.
  • Brandeis first-year Jamie Staub (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hun School) suffered the loss, falling to 1-7 on the season. She gave up three hits and one run in three innings, but walked four against just one strikeout. Classmate Claire Warden (Annadale, Va./Woodson) went 3.1 innings and gave up nine hits and four earned runs with a walk.
  • Brooks improved to 7-2 for WashU, throwing 3.2 innings of four-hit ball, allowing one earned run with two strikeouts and no walks.
  • The teams combined for 23 hits – 11 for Brandeis and 12 for WashU. Manes for the Judges and Schneider and Harper Nix each had three for the Bears.
