WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's tennis team won its seventh-straight match today with their most impressive victory in the streak, defeating 12th-ranked Wellesley, 5-2, on the road.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 7-6, ranked #48 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
  • Wellesley, 13-3, ranked #12 in Division III.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The bottom of the Judges' lineup was key to today's victory. In doubles action, the Blue won the opening match at #2, 6-3. Senior Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India/Kumkum School) and junior Rebecca Suarez (New York, N.Y./International Virtual Learning Academy) answered with a 6-2 victory at #1.
  • The point was clinched at #3, where seniors Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece/Anatolia College) and Cecilia Denis (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) were broken in the opening game, but got back on serve at 4-4. They traded breaks to get to 5-5, then both teams held in the next two games to get to a tiebreaker. The Judges rolled to the tiebreaker, 7-2, to earn the 7-6 win and the doubles point to get on the board after the match went just over an hour.
  • In singles action, Suarez helped the Judges jump out to a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-0, victory.
  • Wellesley battled back to win at 2 and 3 in three sets. Sofia Corte-Real edged Brandeis sophomore Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India/Aavishkar School), 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in a match that lasted more than two-and-a-half hours at #2 and Sophie Buttorff came back against junior Nancy Zhang (Shanghai, China/Shanghai International Division), 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, in an hour and 49 minutes, tying he match at 2-2.
  • Sia earned her second win of the day at #4 singles, 6-4, 7-5. In the second set, she trailed, 5-2, but rallied to win the last five games of the match to get the Judges to 3-2.
  • The match was clinched in a much less dramatic fashion at #6, where sophomore Mandy Reyes (Manila, Philippines/Laurel Springs School) won, 6-0, 6-0. It was Reyes's sixth-straight win, and she hasn't lost more than one game in a set in the last four matches.
  • The final match was another marathon at #5, where first-year Charly Saltz (Natick, Mass./Learning Post Academy) needed 2 hours and 21 minutes to defeat Rianna Mariotti in a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5).
