Burdenski helps softball walk off against CMU, 5-4

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team earned a win in its University Athletic Association finale with visiting Carnegie Mellon, walking off with a 5-4 over the Tartans on a Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Ranch Bernardo) single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 7-19-1, 3-6 UAA.
  • Carnegie Mellon: 11-14, 4-5 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges took advantage of wildness from CMU starter Gabriella Triano, scoring four times in the first inning on just one hit. After loading the bases on walks, Burdenski hit a sacrifice fly to left, first-year Jordan Wallace (Howell, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall, Conn.) reached on an error that allowed two more runs to score. Senior catcher Tristan Boyer (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) singled to make it 4-0, Brandeis.
  • Carnegie Mellon coach Monica Harrison summoned Gianna Adams from the bullpen, and she kept Brandeis in check until the eighth inning.
  • CMU got on the board against Brandeis starter Claire Warden (Annandale, Va./Woodson) in the third, loading the bases with none out.
  • Allie Rome plated a run with a grounder to third, as Brandeis tagged the base for the first out and threw home, but the Judges were unable to apply the tag in time. Reagan Diamond doubled home the second run of the frame, but Warden induced a pop to second and got a called third strike to leave two runners in scoring position.
  • In the fourth, CMU's Koko Sagae circled the bases on a triple to left, as the Judges committed an error on the relay throw.
  • The Tartans had runners on the corners with two away in the fifth, but Brandeis sniffed out a double steal and threw out Rome at the plate.
  • Abbey Reese and Kiera Boucher hit back-to-back doubles with one out for the visitors, scoring the tying run in the sixth against Warden, but Brandeis reliever Kathryn Vermeulen (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) got two groundouts to keep the game tied.
  • Vermeulen got another strikeout looking to end the seventh and stranded a runner on third in the eighth to set up the Judges' heroics.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, sophomore 1B Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) singled to right to start the inning. She was bunted to second by grad student 3B Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) and scored on Burdenski's single through the left side, where the ball was not fielded cleanly, allowing Boehmer to score without a throw.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Burdenski was Brandeis's only multiple hitter and the only Judges with two RBI. Boehmer scored twice.
  • Reese and Sagae each had two hits for CMU, with Sagae crossing the plate twice.
  • Vermeulen improved to 3-5 in the circle for the Judges with 2.2 scoreless innings. She allowed just two hits and struck out two, both ending innings, without walking a batter.
  • Adams suffered the loss for the Tartans, falling to 5-4 on the season. After shutting out Brandeis on Friday, she threw 6.2 innings of four-hit ball today, allowing just the one earned run in the eighth. She struck out 12 and walked just one, throwing 117 pitches.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges' Tuesday afternoon game against Endicott has been postponed. They will next head to St. Louis to take on Washington University in another UAA series next weekend starting at 4 p.m. (3 Central).
