Judges drop pitcher's duel with Tufts, 2-0

MEDFORD, Mass. – Three Brandeis University baseball pitchers held host Tufts to just two runs on six hits, but the host Jumbos' staff one-upped them by holding the Judges scoreless on two hits in a 2-0 contest on Tufts' Sol Gittelman Field.
TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 2-5.
  • Tufts, 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Jumbos played some small ball in the bottom of the second to get all the scoring they would need. 1B Cooper Smith led off with a walk. After a fielder's choice and a pop to second, Tufts' CF Henry Fleckner stole second. He then scored on the game's first hit, a single to right by catcher Connor Brala.
  • Brandeis threatened in the fourth, when grad student and starting pitcher Eddie Zanor (Branford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) drew a one-out walk and sophomore LF Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) singled up the middle for the Judges' first hit. Tufts first-year Emmet Christian got a liner to second and a grounder to short to escape unscathed.
  • The Judges got another runner in scoring position in the sixth when they drew two two-out walks, but they couldn't get the runners home.
  • Tufts threatened in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases with two outs on a hit batter, a single by Fleckner and a walk, but Brandeis sophomore Jansen Landen (Swampscott, Mass./Austin Prep) induced a grounder to short to end the inning.
  • Brandeis had another chance to break the ice in the seventh, as two walks were sandwiched around two outs. A passed ball moved both base runners into scoring position, but Jumbo reliever Jack McLaughlin got a harmless roller to short.
  • The hosts scored an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, again with two outs. A hit batter moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by DH Max Pavlik, who went to second on the throw home. Tufts tried to add a third run on a single by James Henshon, but Aronwald cut down Pavlik at the plate to keep it a 2-0 game.
  • The Judges got their second hit of the game with one out in the top of the ninth, a pinch single to second base by junior Alex Kim (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), but the Jumbos got a strikeout and grounder to third to end the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • There was only one multiple hitter in the game, Tufts' Henshon. No one had an extra-base hit.
  • Zanor was tagged with the loss despite giving up just three hits and one earned run in five innings of work. He struck out three and walked two.
  • Tufts' Christian earned the win, allowing one hit in four innings, striking out four and walking two.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges head to Buzzard's Bay, Mass., to take on Mass Maritime Academy in a doubleheader at 12 noon.
