Softball sweeps NYU, 2-0 and 5-4

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team got a three-hit shutout from junior Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Acad.) in the opener and a walk-off home run from first-year Katie Baydian (Massapequa, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader from University Athletic Association rivals NYU today, 2-0 and 5-4, on Marcus Field.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 4-15, 2-3 UAA.
  • NYU, 8-12, 0-2 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (Brandeis 2, NYU 0)
  • In the opener, the only scoring in the game came in the bottom of the first inning. Baydian led off the Judges' inning with a single to right, and two batters later, sophomore Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) launched a two-run home run to center field.
  • The homer was Boehmer's first of the season and the second of her career.
  • That was all the offense needed, as Kannan was dominant in the circle. After allowing a leadoff single, Kannan allowed NYU just three more baserunners the rest of the way.
  • The Violets got a single back through the box in the third, a walk in the sixth and another hit back to Kannan in the seventh. Only once did the NYU runner advance past first base.
  • Kannan finished with seven strikeouts and one walk, allowing three hits. She threw 102 pitches, 64 for strikes.
  • The complete game was the 30th of Kannan's career – the 13th player in school history to reach that total – while the shutout was her seventh, tied for sixth on Brandeis's career list. Kannan improved to 1-3 on the season.
  • NYU's Karleigh Kluever took the loss, falling to 4-4. She allowed six hits and two earned runs, striking out three with no walks. She lost despite not allowing a run after the first inning, only allowing three Judges into scoring position the rest of the way.
  • Brandeis grad student 3B Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) was the only player with multiple hits in the game, going 2-3 with a double that hit off the top of the fence. That was the game's only extra-base hit besides Boehmer's home run.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (Brandeis 5, NYU 4)
  • It looked like an early home run would make the difference in game 2 as well, with first-year DP Jordan Wallace (Howell, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall, Conn.) delivering a two-run blast to center field in the second inning. It was her first of the season and of her collegiate career.
  • The Judges added a third run in the frame when CF Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) singled and came home on a double by senior 2B Fiona Doiron (Charlton, Mass./Marianopolis Prep) and an overthrow by the NYU right fielder.
  • Brandeis increased their lead to 4-0 in the third when Boehmer led off with a walk. Nash followed with a grounder to short, but it was dropped at second base on the force attempt. After a wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position, the NYU pitcher got two easy outs, but she uncorked another wild pitch, allowing Boehmer to score.
  • The Violets started their climb back into the game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Claire Carson that plated Alyssa Quary.
  • NYU's Nicole Cicchetti had her hands in the next three runs for the visitors, doubling home a run in the fifth and bringing one in with a single in the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-3.
  • She moved to second on the throw home, to third on a wild pitch and scored on Quary's single that tied it up at 4-all.
  • Graduate student Kathryn Vermeulen (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) came on in relief of first-year Jamie Staub (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hun School), and after giving up a single and a grounder to second, stranded the runners in scoring position with a fly to right.
  • That set up Baydian's heroics, as she deposited the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh over the fence in center for the walk-off win. It was Baydian's first home run of the season and of her collegiate career.
  • Vermeulen earned the win in relief of Staub, allowing just the one hit in 0.2 innings to improve to 2-5. Staub gave up seven hits and four earned runs in 6.1 innings. She struck out one and walked four with a hit batter.
  • NYU's Olyvia Rutter got the start and a no-decision, throwing five innings of four-hit ball. She allowed four runs (two earned) with two strikeouts and three walks. Marina Egbert took the loss, falling to 2-1, after allowing two hits in one inning, including the walk-off homer.
  • Baydian was the only multiple hitter for the Judges, going 2-4 with her homer, one RBI and one run scored. Wallace's homer and Doiron's double were the only other extra-base hits.
  • NYU's Emily Barbire had a three-hit game, including a double, while Cicchetti had a double, two RBI and a run scored.
