WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team spotted visiting NYU an eight-run lead after an inning-and-a-half, then came back to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, only to see the Violets hit a game-winning home run in the top of the eighth to take a 13-12 victory and salvage Game 3 of the University Athletic Association series on Marcus Field.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 4-16, 2-4 UAA.
- NYU, 9-12, 1-2 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- NYU opened up its 8-0 lead by batting around and scoring seven runs in the first, with Emily Barbire and Naya Schubel each driving in two in the frame, and then getting a solo homer from Claire Carson in the second.
- Brandeis started their comeback in the bottom of the second, sending 10 batters to the plate. Junior pinch-runner Erin Hunt (L/R Wake Forest, N.C. Franklin Academy) scored on a wild pitch, senior 2B Fiona Doiron (Charlton, Mass./Marianapolis Prep) singled home two runs and sophomore 1B Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebabon) doubled home a run that made it 8-5. The Judges could have done more damage, but left two runners in scoring position.
- After a scoreless third – the only entirely scoreless frame of the game – the teams traded blows in the fourth. Carson hit her second homer of the game with one aboard to increase NYU's lead to 10-5.
- Brandeis grad student 3B Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) singled in one run and first-year catcher Dylan Yamamura (Newbury Park, Calif. Newbury Park) added her first collegiate RBI on a ground out, pulling Brandeis back within three, 10-7, after four.
- The Violets scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, while making fine defensive plays on Brandeis in the bottom of each frame to push their lead back to 12-7 after six.
- With two runners in scoring position in the fifth, NYU got a nice leaping grab at shortstop by Emma Aridi to prevent at least one run and end the inning. In the sixth, a hot shot to third with two on saw Victoria Negron alertly tag the runner at third before firing across the diamond for a double play to end the inning.
- Down five entering their final at-bat, the Judges batted around again in the seventh, scoring five times on four hits, a walk and a costly error. After a single and a walk put the first two runners on, NYU got a force at third for the first out of the inning.
- Brandeis first-year SS Katie Baydian (Massapequa, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Acad.) singled up the middle for the first run of the frame. The Violets should have gotten the second out of the inning on a grounder to short, but the ball was juggled at first base, allowing Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif./San Juan Hills) to reach safely and grad student Kathryn Vermeulen (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) to score.
- Boehmer followed with a double down the right-field line that pulled Brandeis within 12-10 with runners on second and third.
- NYU starter Karleigh Kluver reentered the game and induced a pop to the catcher for the second out of the inning, but Brandeis senior catcher Tristan Boyer (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) singled under a diving NYU player up the middle, plating two runs and tying the game at 12-all. Kluver got a grounder to second base to end the inning.
- In the top of the eighth – with the courtesy runner not in effect until the 10th in UAA play – Brandeis reliever Jamie Staub (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hun School), who had gotten out of the seventh unscathed, got the first two outs on hard-hit balls to the outfield before Aridi took her deep to right-center with what would prove to be the game-winning run.
- Kluewer retired the Judges in order in the bottom of the eighth, including two strikeouts of the first two batters, to earn the win and prevent the Brandeis sweep.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The teams combined for 25 runs and 28 hits with nine walks in the slugfest.
- Baydian and Boehmer each went 3-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored for the Judges. Baydian had one double, while Boehmer had two and added a stolen base.
- All nine NYU starters had a hit, with six of them getting two. RF Siena Kiefer had the only three-hit game, going 3-5 with two runs scored.
- Carson had the best all-around game of any hitter, going 2-3 with her two home runs, three RBI, and four runs scored. She also drew two walks.
- In the circle. Brandeis junior Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) had the longest outing, throwing five innings of relief from the second through the sixth. She allowed seven hits, five earned runs, walked two and had a strikeout.
- Staub took the loss for the Judges, giving up just two hits and one earned run in two innings of work, but surrendering the game-winning homer. She falls to 1-4 on the season.
- Kluever, who started the game and lasted just an inning-and-a-third, came on again in relief to earn the win and improve to 5-4. She threw 2.2 innings, allowing three hits, five runs (four earned), walking two and striking out two.
- Her 1-2-3 eighth was one of only two such innings in the game, along with the NYU third inning, thrown by Kannan.
- The loss snapped Brandeis's three-game winning streak.
