Baseball sees 4-game win streak snapped at Wheaton, 5-1

NORTON, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team saw its four-game winning streak halted today as the Judges suffered a 5-1 loss at the hands of Wheaton College on the road.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 8-9.
  • Wheaton, 7-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wheaton scored three runs in the first two innings. In the first, 1B Timmy Wagner delivered a two-out double to open the scoring.
  • In the second, the Lyons scored twice on three hits, a walk and one key error in the outfield that made the runs unearned.
  • Wheaton pitcher Greg Strite kept the visitors off the board through his six innings of work. He scattered four hits and struck out three with two walks and a hit batter.
  • The Judges broke through against the Wheaton bullpen in the seventh when first-year 3B Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle, but the Judges left two runners on base.
  • Wheaton answered with two more runs in the seventh, as they loaded the bases on three walks and got a two-run double from catcher Tyler Bellan that made it 5-1. The Lyons stranded two runners in scoring position, but it was enough, as the Judges stranded two of their own in the eighth and went down in order in the ninth.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Kuja was the top hitter for the Judges, going 3-5 with an RBI and a double. Classmate catcher Keith Lee (Milford, Mass./Milford) went 2-3 with a run scored, as the pair accounted for five of the Judges' eight hits.
  • Sophomore LF Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) also had a double for the Judges.
  • First-year lefty Keni Franck (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) took the loss, giving up four hits and three runs (one earned) in 1.2 innings of work. He walked one and struck out one. Franck is 1-1 on the season.

  • Wheaton's Tommy Beauregard and Kevin Matos each had three hits for the Lyons.
  • Strite improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.
