WALTHAM, Mass. – For the second year in a row, the Lasell Lasers were visitors on their home field but still came away with a win, defeating the Brandeis University baseball team, 8-2, on Stein Diamond tonight.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 8-10.
- Lasell, 12-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams were nearly even in hits, with Lasell leading the category, 11-10. The Lasers drew seven walks to just two by the Judges, scoring their first six runs on just three hits.
- The Lasers scored twice in the first without a hit, as Judge starter Jeremy Byers (Chino Hills, Calif./Ruben Ayala) issued walks to three of the first four hitters, earning an early exit. Two runs scored on a fielder's choice and an error, but the Judges converted their second chance at a play at the plate to help mitigate the damage.
- Lasell scored on a Tim Callahan sacrifice fly in the second, and in the third, two more walks were followed by a Scott Lyon home run, giving the visitors a 6-0 lead.
- The Judges got RBI doubles from graduate student Jake Freed (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) in the fourth and sophomore Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) in the fifth.
- Lasell answered with an RBI single by CJ Mills in the fifth and a Pierce Clare RBI double in the eighth to close out the scoring, 8-2.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Needing to save arms for this weekend's University Athletic Association series with Chicago, Brandeis employed eight different pitchers. Byers took the loss, giving up the first two runs on three walks and an error.
- Lasell's Jeremy Blackwood turned in a fine performance, improving to 2-0 with six innings, allowing eight hits, but no runs until the fifth. He walked two and struck out two.
- At the plate, Lasell's CJ Mills went 4-5 runs scored, while Lyon's 3-run home run gave him the the RBI for the day.
- Brandeis's Freed and grad student Eddie Zanor (Branford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) each had two hits. They and Aronwald all doubled for the Judges' only extra-base hits.
- The Judges had won the first seven meetings between Brandeis and Lasell before the Lasers have taken the last two showdowns on Stein Diamond.
