Ohm nets 21, but Chicago pulls away late for 69-55 win

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team was within two points of visiting University of Chicago with just under five minutes to play, but the Maroons closed the game on a 14-3 run to take a 69-55 decision in University Athletic Association play today.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis opened strong, as leading scorers Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and Abby Kennedy (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) each hit 3-pointers to give the Judges a 6-2 lead.
  • The Maroons controlled the rest of the first stanza, holding the Judges to 1-of-5 with seven turnovers as they outscored Brandeis, 10-3 the rest of the way to take a 12-8 lead.
  • Both teams were as even as could be over the next two quarters, with the teams each scoring 20 points in the second and 15 in the third.
  • The Maroons led by as many as eight points in the second quarter and nine in the third, but each time, the Judges used a late run to get back within four at the end of the stanza.
  • Ohm got the Judges within a point in the fourth quarter, scoring the team's first seven points. Her 3-pointer with 6:34 to go in the game pulled Brandeis within 51-50.
  • Brandeis got a stop on their next possession, but were unable to capitalize.
  • Chicago's Bella Alfaro drew a foul while shooting a 3-pointer on the Maroons' next possession, hitting all three to give the visitors a 54-50 lead.
  • Judge junior Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) scored on a put-back to get Brandeis within 54-52 with 4:54 on the clock.
  • The Maroons were able to pull away from there, scoring 14 of the game's last 17 points to complete the 69-55 victory and secure the season split with the Judges.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ohm led all scorers with 21 points, nine coming in the fourth quarter. She shot 8-for-16 from the field, 2-for-3 from deep and 3-for-3 from the line. She reached the 20-point plateau for the 11th time in 20 games this season. Ohm also led the Judges with four assists.
  • Kennedy finished with 11 points, while Vaughan had nine.
  • Graduate student Elena Delicado (Madrid, Spain/IES Parque de Lisboa) had a game-high six rebounds as the Judges edged the visitors on the boards, 33-31.
  • Chicago was paced by Alfaro, who scored 15 points and Sophia North, who notched 14.
  • Annabelle Spotts scored 10 off the bench, helping the Maroon reserves outscore their Brandeis counterparts, 28-9.
  • Kasi Samuda led Chicago with five rebounds, while Kate Gross led all players with seven assists.

  • The Judges head back on the road for their next two UAA contests, taking the University of Rochester next Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.
