Women's can't overcome slow start in 70-52 loss at Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team fell in an early hole and couldn't climb out as the Judges suffered a 70-52 defeat at the hands of the University of Rochester tonight in University Athletic Association action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Brandeis offense struggled to get on track early, as UR scored the game's first 10 points and never looked back.
  • The Judges hit just two of their first 18 shots as the hosts took an 18-4 lead after one quarter.
  • The Brandeis offense found its stride in the second period, when they outscored the Yellowjackets, 18-15.
  • The Judges were able to climb within six on several occasions, the latest on a lay-up by first-year Jessica Maina (Bradford, Mass./Brooks School) that made it 28-22, UR, with 2:34 to go before the half.
  • The Brandeis defense played mostly zone as they got back into the game, but Rochester scored the last five points of the second to take a 33-22 lead on an Annelise Dexter jumper.
  • UR opened the second half on a 7-0 run, holding the Judges without a field goal for 4:32 as they took an 18-point lead.
  • The hosts would take a 20-point lead on an Abby Gress putback with a minute to go before two Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) free throws got Brandeis within 55-37 headed into the fourth.
  • Rochester pushed their lead back to 20 at 60-40 with 6:35 to go.
  • The Brandeis reserves were able to go on a 10-2 run, with a Maina 3-pointer with 3:47 left getting the visitors back within 12 at 62-40, but the Judges would get no closer.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Senior Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham), the UAA's leading scorer, was held to 10 points, half of her season average. She hit just 3-of-13 from the field and 1-of-2 from beyond the arc.
  • Ohm also tied for team-high honors with seven rebounds.
  • Vaughan and Maina each scored seven points, while Vaughan matched Ohm's seven rebound total.
  • Graduate student Elena Delicado (Madrid, Spain/IES Parque de Lisboa) led the Judges with three assists.
  • The Judges were held to their third-lowest scoring total of their UAA schedule, while their 27.4% shooting was their third-lowest of the entire campaign.
  • Rochester's Abby Gress led all players with 24 points, while Erin Lillis added 17. Gress also had a game-high 12 rebounds.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis and Rochester split the season series for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
  • The Judges had defeated UR, 58-41, first time around.
