REDLANDS, Calif. – The 27
th-ranked Brandeis University women's tennis team came up just short in their first match of their trip to California, falling to #21 University of Redlands, 4-3.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 0-2, ranked 27th in Division III by the ITA.
- Redlands, 2-0, ranked 21st in Division III by the ITA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The rule change that makes doubles worth one point cost the Judges in this match, as Brandeis swept the three doubles matches.
- Sophomore Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India/Aavishkar School) and senior Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India/Kumkum School) were 6-2 winners at #2, while seniors Cecilia Denis (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) and Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece/Anatolia College) took a 6-4 victory at #3 to clinch the doubles point.
- Sophomore Mandy Reyes (Manila, Philippines/Laurel Springs School) and junior Rebecca Suarez (New York, N.Y./International Virtual Learning Academy) outlasted their opponents, 7-6 (7-5), at #1 to complete the sweep.
- Suarez, who was not at 100% entering the match, sat out singles play and saw the rest of the team move up a spot.
- First-year Charly Saltz (Natick, Mass./Learning Post Academy) earned her first collegiate win at #6, 6-3, 6-1, but Redands won in straight sets at every other position but #4 to earn the come-from-behind win. The Bulldogs were victorious in tiebreakers in their wins at #3 and #5.
- Sia earned her second win of the day at #4, 3-6, 6-2, 5-0, after her opponent retired before the final game of the match.
