Women complete season sweep of Case, 58-43

WALTHAM, Mass. –  The Brandeis University women's basketball team went on an 18-2 run that spanned the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth as the Judges completed a season sweep of visiting Case Western Reserve University, 58-43, in University Athletic Association action in Red Auerbach Arena tonight.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 12-11, 5-7 UAA.
  • Case Western University, 7-16, 2-10 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams played a defensive first quarter. Case jumped out to an 8-0 lead after just four minutes of play, but Brandeis closed the stanza on a 10-2 run to tie things at 10-all headed into the second.
  • The Judges stayed aggressive to start the new period, scoring the first 11 points to take a 21-10 lead on the Spartans following junior Abby Kennedy's (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) 3-pointer with five minutes to go in the stanza.
  • Brandeis was able to maintain its three-possession lead into the half, going up 27-18. Kennedy had eight first-half points, while CWRU's Mya Hartje had seven.
  • After the Judges scored the first two points of second half to reestablish their 11-point lead at 29-18, the Spartans mounted a comeback. The visitors scored the game's next 12 points, taking a 30-29 lead on Evie Miller's lay-up with 6:01 on the clock.
  • Brandeis responded in a big way, holding the Spartans to just one field goal the rest of the period. Meanwhile, the Judges reclaimed the lead for good on a Caitlin Gresko (Howell, N.J./Howell) back-door lay-up with 4:58 left in the third.
  • That kicked off Brandeis's game-turning 18-2 run that spanned 8:44 of the third and fourth quarters. The Judges hit all three of their 3-pointers during the streak, including two by first-year Jessica Maina (Bradford, Mass./Brooks School) and one by Kennedy.
  • Brandeis took a 37-32 lead into the fourth quarter, and then opened the fourth with Maina's back-to-back trifectas that opened up a 43-32 advantage.
  • The Spartans missed 12 out of 13 shots with four turnovers during the big streak by Brandeis.
  • CWRU snapped the Brandeis momentum on a Nyah Moore three-point play, but the Judges never let the lead fall below double digits the rest of the way.
