Women drop 62-51 decision to CMU

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team couldn't complete a weekend University Athletic Association sweep, as the Judges fell to visiting Carnegie Mellon today, 62-51, in Red Auerbach Arena.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 12-12, 5-8 UAA.
  • Carnegie Mellon, 19-5, 9-4 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges outplayed the Tartans in the first quarter, outscoring the visitors, 15-9. Brandeis shot 46.2% (6-13) in the opening 10 minutes, while CMU shot just 30% (3-10).
  • The second period was also a defensive struggle, with the teams combining for just 22 points. CMU cut Brandeis's lead to two points at the break, 24-22, by holding the home team to just 21.4% (3-14) from the field.
  • The Tartans did the same to the Judges in the third to pull away. While holding Brandeis to the same 3-for-14 performance, the Tartans hit 8-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
  • CMU's Catherine Or scored 16 points in the middle two quarters, including nine in the second and seven in the third as the Tartans led, 42-32, heading into the final period.
  • The visitors opened the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run, taking their biggest lead of the game at 16 points on a jumper by Nicole Timko that made it 50-34 with about seven-and-a-half minutes remaining.
  • Brandeis would climb within seven points with 2:17 to go on a free throw by senior Caitlin Gresko (Howell, N.J./Howell), but the Judges would get no closer as the Tartans closed out the 11-point win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis had three players score in double digits, as senior Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and juniors Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) and Abby Kennedy (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) all scored 11 points.
  • Vaughan also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to record her second double-double of the season and first since the campaign opener. It was the third double-double of her career.
  • Gresko added eight points and seven boards, helping Brandeis win the rebounding battle, 39-31, including 14-7 on the offensive glass.
  • Vaughan and junior Brooke Reed (Chantilly, Va./Westfield) each had two assists to lead the Judges.
  • CMU was paced by Or, who played a terrific all-around game. She led all players with 27 points and five assists. Or hit 10-of-21 from the field, 2-of-4 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the line.
  • Timko added 14 points off the bench, four more than the entire Brandeis reserves.
