CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Brandeis University softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games on their February Break trip to California, dropping 7-4 and 5-0 decisions to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 1-7.
- Pomona-Pitzer: 5-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (Pomona-Pitzer 7, Brandeis 4)
- After two-and-a-half innings of scoreless, hitless ball, Pomona-Pitzer broke through in the bottom of the third. 3B Marie Milton led off with a double against Brandeis graduate student Kathryn Vermeulen (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) and scored three batters later on a fielder's choice.
- Milton struck again in the fourth, doubling home two teammates who walked and got hit by a pitch, and scoring on an error to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.
- In the fifth, the Sagehens scored three more runs on two hits, with catcher Kylie Liu doubling home a run and two more coming in on bases-loaded walks.
- The Judges spoiled Pomona-Pitzer's shutout bid with four runs in the top of the sixth on their first three hits. Junior CF Erin Hunt (Wake Forest, N.C./Franklin Academy) reached on an error, and sophomore LF Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) doubled to put runners in scoring position. After a hit batter loaded the bases, junior CF Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) unloaded them with a triple down the right-field line. She scored on senior 2B Anna Kolb's (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) single, making it 7-4 in favor of the hosts.
- Brandeis threatened in the top of the seventh with a walk and a fielder's choice, but the Sagehens got a pop-up double play to end the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (Pomona-Pitzer 5, Brandeis 0)
- The Judges were victimized by the long ball twice in Game 2, as Pomona-Pitzer pitcher Devin Waddell went deep in both the first and third innings to help her own cause.
- Waddell also singled and scored a run in the fifth, while the Sagehens tacked on two more runs in the sixth on a two-run pinch single by Sophia Roberts.
- Meanwhile, Waddell held the Judges scoreless in the circle, allowing just five hits, all singles. She struck out five and walked just one.
- Brandeis first-year Claire Warden (Annandale, Va./Woodson) tossed a complete game, but fell to 0-2 on the season after allowing 10 hits and five earned runs. She struck out one and did not walk a batter.
- Brandeis's Hunt had two of the team's five hits out of the lead-off slot, along with a sacrifice bunt.
