Softball drops a pair of heartbreakers to Whittier to close California trip

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Brandeis University softball team lost a pair of one-run games today to Whittier College on the last day of the team's trip to the West Coast for February break. The Judges led heading into the bottom of the sixth inning in both games, but fell 4-3 and 8-7.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 1-9.
  • Whittier, 3-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (Whittier 4, Brandeis 3)
  • The Judges got off to a strong start in Game 1, as senior Anna Kolb (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) hit a one-out double and scored two batters later on a triple by sophomore Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon).
  • The Poets answered with single runs in the second and third to go ahead, 2-1.
  • Brandeis went back on top in the top of the fourth, when first-year Katie Baydian (Massapequa, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Acad.) delivered  a two-run double, the second and third RBI of her career, to put the visitors ahead, 3-2.
  • Grad student Kathryn Vermeulen (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) kept Whittier in check until the sixth inning. After issuing a lead-off walk, first-year Claire Warden (Annandale, Va/ Woodson) came on in relief. After Whittier singled to put runners on the corners, an error in the outfield allowed the tying run to score, and a sacrifice fly put the Poets in the lead, 4-3. The Judges got out of the inning with a fly-out double play, but Whittier retired the side in order in the seventh to finish off the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (Whittier 8, Brandeis 7)
  • In Game 2, Whittier struck first with a pair doubles in the bottom of the first.
  • Brandeis went back on top in the second on an RBI single by first-year Mary Doud (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), the first of her career, and a run-producing double by Kolb.
  • Grad student Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) belted a run-scoring double to make it 3-1, Brandeis, in the third.
  • Whittier got a run back in the fifth to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Judges looked to put it away with a four-spot in the top of the sixth.
  • Senior Fiona Doiron (Charlton, Mass./Marianapolis Prep.) had an RBI single in the frame, while the big blow was a three-run home run for Kolb. It was her first of the season, and the Judges' first of the campaign. It was the fifth homer of her career, and tied her career-high with four RBI in a game.
  • Unfortunately, the Judges couldn't hang on, as Whitter sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs against two Brandeis pitchers. The Poets had two singles, a walk and a two-run double against Warden, who took over for first-year Jamie Staub (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hun School), cutting the lead to 7-4.
  • Vermeulen came on in relief and got a comebacker to the circle for the first out of the frame. A wild pitch allowed Whittier's next run to score, and a pair of walks loaded the bases.
  • Vermeulen traded a run for an out on a sacrifice fly that made it 7-6, Brandeis, with two away. Vermeulen got the next Poet batter to fly to center, but the Judges couldn't make the play, and two unearned run scored, giving the home team an 8-7 lead.
  • Whittier worked around a two-out single in the top of the seventh to complete the sweep.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges return to New England, with their first scheduled games slated for March 15 at home against Wentworth at 12 noon.
