ORANGE, Calif. – The Brandeis University softball team was limited to three hits in each end of a non-conference doubleheader today, as the Judges fell to Chapman University, 5-0 and 3-0, in the third of five dates on the West Coast.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 1-5.
- Chapman, 4-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (Chapman 5, Brandeis 0)
- The opener was a scoreless pitcher's duel through the first five innings between Brandeis grad student Kathryn Vermeulen (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) and Chapman's Rose Malen.
- The Panthers had an opportunity to break through in the second, putting runners on second and third with one out after a pair of walks and a passed ball. Vermeulen escaped damage with a pop-up back to the circle and a fly to center.
- The Judges put their first two runners on in the fourth, with junior Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif./San Juan Hills) picking up the game's first hit and sophomore Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) getting hit by a pitch. Malen responded with two pop-ups and a called third escape to keep the game scoreless.
- Vermeulen worked around a one-out triple in the bottom of the frame and a lead-off walk in the fifth.
- Boehmer had a one-out single in the sixth, but was stranded at first.
- The Panthers broke through against Vermeulen in the bottom of the sixth for five runs. They had three hits, a hit batter and a walk, as well as a key error that made three of the five runs unearned.
- Brandeis's Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) led off the seventh with a single, but was erased on a double play as the Panthers completed the shutout.
- Vermeulen took the loss for Brandeis, giving up four hits and five runs (two earned). She walked six without a strikeout, and had four wild pitches. She falls to 1-2 on the season.
- Chapman's Malen improved to 2-0 with a complete-game three hitter. She struck out seven and walked just one with one hit batter.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (Chapman 3, Brandeis 0)
- The second game was another low-scoring affair between Brandeis first-year Jamie Staub (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hun School) and Chapman's Jillian Kelly.
- Staub got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second, after a double, a single and a walk, thanks to a strikeout.
- The Panthers broke through in the third after Mia Reyes drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double by Illiana Serna with what proved to be the game-winning run.
- Chapman added a pair of unearned insurance runs in the sixth on a two-run double by Grace Fosselman.
- The Judges had a chance to spoil the shutout bid in the top of the seventh when Boehmer hit a one-out triple, but Kelly got a strikeout and fly out to center to end the game.
- Staub fell to 0-2 on the season after throwing her first complete game. She went six innings with six hits, three runs (one earned), two strikeouts and three walks.
- Chapman's Kelly improved to 2-0 with her three-hitter, striking out seven without a walk.
