Kennedy goes for career-highs 25 pts, 8 rebs, but comeback falls short at Emory, 77-69

ATLANTA, Ga. – Brandeis University junior Abby Kennedy (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) notched career-highs with 25 points and eight rebounds, but the Judges couldn't come all the way back after cutting a 17-point deficit to five as the Judges took a 77-69 University Athletic Association loss on the road at Emory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter saw three ties and four lead changes, as both teams shot well from the field. Brandeis hit 8-of-14 and Emory went 8-of-17. The Eagles connected on 5-of-8 from 3-point range, while Brandeis was 3-of-4 from deep, including a bank shot by Kennedy on the last possession to bring Brandeis within 21-20 after 10 minutes.
  • The Judges were able to tie things up or the fourth time early in the second period on a pair of Kennedy free throws that made it 23-all with just over three minutes elapsed.
  • Emory answered with a 10-4 run over the next two minutes that gave the hosts their largest lead of the first half, 33-27, on a Mary Mullinax trifecta with 4:03 on the clock.
  • Brandeis got back within one on a 3-pointer by senior Mollie Obar (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greeley), but Emory scored the final five points of the stanza to take a 38-32 lead into the break.
  • Kennedy led all players with 10 first-half points, while the Eagles' Alexandra Loucopoulos had nine.
  • The Eagles opened the second half on an 16-5 run over the first 5:40 that gave them their largest lead at 54-37 on a put-back from Lily Kennedy.
  • The Judges started to claw their way back in the game by closing the third on a 9-3 run that got them within 57-46. Second-chances were key in the stanza, as Emory converted seven offensive rebounds into eight points, compared to one and zero for the Judges.
  • Brandeis continued their run into the fourth quarter, scoring seven of the first eight point. A Kennedy jumper with 69 seconds elapsed in the final period got the Judges within 58-53.
  • The visitors looked to get a stop on the next possession, but the Judges were called for a technical, allowing Emory to push their lead back to nine.
  • Kennedy scored on a fast-break with 6:59 left to get Brandeis back within 62-57. Both teams went cold, as nearly two-and-a-half minute elapsed without another score.
  • Emory eventually broke through on a Locoupoulos free throw that sparked a 7-2 run, allowing the Eagles to put the game away.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Kennedy led all scorers with her 25 points, including 13 during the Judges' fourth-quarter comeback attempt. She hit 9-of-15 overall, 2-of-6 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the line. Her previous career-best was 20 points.
  • Kennedy's career-high eight rebounds all came on the defensive end.
  • Ohm finished with 15 points, nine coming in the first half. She stuffed the stat sheet with game-highs of four assists and five steals.
  • Junior Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) added 12 points and seven rebounds.
  • The Judges shot 49% from the field for the game (25-51), while holding the Eagles to 39.7% (25-63), but Emory outscored the Judges 30-15 on 3-pointers an 17-14 from the free-throw line.
  • The hosts also used a 37-31 advantage on the glass that included a 14-6 edge on the offensive end, to outscore Brandeis, 13-5, in second-chance points, offsetting Brandeis's 19-16 edge in points off turnovers.
  • Emory's Hannah Malik led the Eagles with 18 points, while Daniella Aronsky and Loucopoulos each had 17.
  • Erin Martin and McKenzi Carter each had six rebounds, while Martin and Aronsky each had three assists. Martin also led EU with four steals.

  • Brandeis will return home for their final three games, starting on Friday, Feb. 21, against Case Western Reserve, at 7:30 p.m.
