MEDFORD and CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's tennis team saw sophomore
Aidan Wang-Fan (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Bill Crothers Secondary School) reach the semifinals of the 'B' draw this weekend as the Judges competed at the ITA Regional Championships at Tufts and MIT.
Wang-Fan, seeded fifth in the 'B' draw, earned a bye into the second round. He knocked off Trinity's Maxim Kauffman, 8-6, to reach Day 2 of the competition. In the Round of 16, he defeated Carter Fayard of Williams, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). The quarterfinals provided a marathon victory over Ronald Gulano of Amherst, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (9-7), 10-8 to advance to the final day of competition. In the semis, Wang-Fan lost to the eventual champion and co-host, Jackson Rich of Tufts, 7-5, 6-0.
First-year
Oliver Lorenz (Albuquerque, N.M. / Rafa Nadal Academy) won a pair of matches in the 'B' draw as well, besting Phakin Thongbooncharoen of Springfield, 8-3, in the first round and upsetting third-seeded Grant Gallagher of MIT, 8-1, in the second before falling to Jack Ling of Williams, 1-6, 6-2, 10-8. Muaz Malik (Dubai, UAE / Laurel Springs School) defeated Peyton Meuse of Colby-Sawyer, 8-0, in the first round but lost to seventh-seeded Matthew Yang of Williams, 8-6, in the second.
In the 'A' singles draw, sophomore
Daniel Shemesh (Modiin, Israel / Ironi Hei School Modiin) was the eighth seed. He rolled to a first-round win over Middlebury's Anand Sahasrabudhe, 6-3, 6-0, but Bowdoin's Andrew Mendelson pulled the upset in the second round, 6-4, 7-5.
In doubles action, Shemesh and junior
Pierce Garbett (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) were a 9-16 seed, giving them a first-round bye. They defeated a pairing from Middlebury, 8-3, in the second round, but dropped a round of 16 match to the eventual tournament runners-up from Williams, 8-4.
Wang-Fan and Lorenz won in the first round, 8-7 (7-2) over opponents from Connecticut College before dropping an 8-3 decision to the top seed from Tufts. Sophomore
Benjamin Kotzen (Austin, Texas/Austin Tennis Academy College Prep) and Malik defeated a Springfield pair, 8-3, in the first round but also lost to Tufts in the second, extending the third seeds before falling, 8-7 (7-2).
The Judges will return to action next weekend for the Wallach Invitational at Bates College.
