#10 women drop top-10 battle with #5 WashU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – In a battle of top-10 teams in the United Soccer Coaches Division III poll, host and defending D3 champions #5 Washington University defeated visiting #10 Brandeis, 4-0, on Francis Olympic Field in the University Athletic Association opener for both teams.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 6-1-3, 0-1 UAA.
  • Washington U., 10-0-1, 1-0 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears got the only goal of the first half in the 15th minute when Madison Foley found the upper 90 on a feed from Sophie Viscovich at the top of the box.
  • Shots were at a premium in the first half, with the Bears owning a 7-4 edge, including 3-0 in shots on goal. Brandeis junior Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside) making a save on Viscovich late in the stanza to keep it a one-goal game.
  • The Bears turned up the pressure in the second half, outshooting Brandeis, 16-2, and doubling their lead in the 56th minute. Foley was just barely able to stay onside on a through ball from Heidi Fesler, and the beat Logan for her second of the game.
  • WashU was able to really turn up the pressure in the final 30 minutes after a Brandeis player was sent off for committing a foul as the last defender between an attacker and the goal.
  • The Judges dodged a bullet when the ensuing PK hit the crossbar and the follow-up went high, but the Bears were able to score two more goals in the 70th and 81st minutes.
  • Logan finished with five saves in the first 81 minutes of action, while sophomore Penny Alston (New York, N.Y./East Side Community) had one save in the final nine minutes.
  • Sophomore Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy Charter School) had three of the Judges' six shots, including their lone shot on goal in the 58th minute.
  • The loss snapped Brandeis's nine-game unbeaten streak.
