#19 women battle to 1-1 draw with #18 CMU on Senior Day

WALTHAM, Mass. – The #19-ranked Brandeis University women's soccer team picked up its first point of the season in University Athletic Association play today, as the Judges battled #18 Carnegie Mellon to a 1-1 draw on Gordon Field in front of a Senior Day crowd.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 7-4-4, 0-4-1 UAA, ranked #19 in Division III by United Soccer Coaches
  • Carnegie Mellon: 9-4-3, 0-3-2 UAA, ranked #18 in Division III by United Soccer Coaches
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges got on the board first early. After a CMU turnover at midfield, sophomore forward Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy Charter School) picked up the ball and dribbled down the right flank.
  • A track and field All-American in the 400-meter dash, Leroy used her speed to get past two defenders to dribble in on the keeper, shooting the ball into the far left netting in the fifth minute for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
  • The Tartans equalized just under 10 minutes later in the 15th minute. Brandeis sophomore Penny Alston (New York, N.Y./East Side Community), making her first start in a conference game, made a nice diving save on CMU's Saveria Ulizzi, but Audrey Bianco was there to blast home the rebound for her eighth goal of the year.
  • The rest of the game was played at a frantic pace, with Brandeis outshooting the Tartans, 21-12, and 16 of the 33 shots coming on goal.
  • Alston's best save came in the 57th minute, when she dove to her right to stone Bianco.
  • The Judges nearly went on top when first-year Grace Carman (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) hit her third crossbar of the weekend in the 81st minute, but Leroy's follow was blocked by the visitors.
  • Alston finished with a career-high six saves, while CMU's Maddie Kellogg had eight stops.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Judges snapped a four-match UAA losing streak, three of which came against the top six teams in Division III this week, in Emory, Washington University and Case Western Reserve.
  • Four of the previous five meetings had been 1-0 wins in favor of Carnegie Mellon.
