ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A goal in the ninth minute proved to be the difference today, as the 21st-ranked University of Rochester women's soccer team edged #13-ranked Brandeis, 1-0, in a University Athletic Association contest on Fauver Field.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 7-3-3, 0-3-0 UAA, ranked #13 in Division III by United Soccer Coaches
  • Rochester, 7-1-5, 1-1-1 UAA, ranked #21 in Division III by United Soccer Coaches
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game's lone goal came early on, when UR's Natalie Santangelo found teammate Hannah Nagashima at the top-left of the 18-yard box. Nagashima turned and unleashed a shot into the far right of the goal, past a diving Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside).
  • Rochester outshot Brandeis, 5-3, in the first half, keeping the Judges off the board.
  • Brandeis's best attempts at an equalizer came in the 62nd and 63rd minutes. Rochester goalkeeper Sydney Moore made a great stop in front of an open net against Judge rookie Grace Carman (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech). On the ensuing corner kick, junior Abby Kenkelen (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill) launched a shot off the right post, and the hosts were able to clear the rebound.
  • Judge sophomore Penny Alston (New York, N.Y./East Side Community) made a terrific leaping save on a header by UR's Sydney Holmes in the 74th minute, and the visitors were unable to get any further sustained pressure on the Yellowjackets.
