Women drop 74-67 decision at #24 Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team cut a 27-point deficit entering the fourth quarter down to eight, but it was too much to overcome as the Judges dropped a 74-67 decision at 24th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University in a University Athletic Association contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges struggled offensively throughout the game, as CMU outshot the Judges, 49% (28-57) to 38% (24-64) for the game, including 56% (9-16) to 30% (7-23) from 3-point range.
  • The Tartans outscored Brandeis in each of the first three quarters. The hosts led 21-12 after one period and 39-25 after two.
  • CMU had their best period in the third, outscoring Brandeis, 22-9, as they took their largest lead of the game at 27 points, 51-34, headed into the final 10 minutes.
  • The Tartans shot better than 50% from the field in each of the first three quarters, while the Judges only broke 30% in the second.
  • The Judges, who came back from 13 down to defeat the Tartans last season, had their best performance in the fourth quarter, when they outscored CMU, 33-13.
  • Brandeis shot 55% from the field in the fourth (11-20), including 60% from beyond the arc (6-10), while holding CMU to 33% overall (3-9) and forcing nine turnovers.
  • Junior Abby Kennedy (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) and senior Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) combined to score 26 of the team's 33 points in the stanza -14 for Kennedy and 12 for Ohm.
  • Twice late in the game the Judges were able to close within single digits, but the deficit was just too much to overcome.  
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ohm, the UAA's leading scorer, finished with a game-high 21 points, hitting 8-of-18 from the field, 3-of-7 from beyond the arc and 2-of-3 from the line. She also distributed a team-high three assists.
  • Kennedy finished with 16 points, most of which came in her big fourth quarter. She finished 6-for-14 from the floor, 2-for-6 from downtown and 2-for-4 from the line. Kennedy also came within one of the school single-game record for steals, coming away with seven.
  • Senior Caitlin Gresko (Howell, N.J./Howell) was the Judges' top scorer through the first three periods, finishing with 12 points.
  • Junior Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) had a team-high nine rebounds.
  • Brandeis forced 19 Carnegie Mellon turnovers while committing just 14 miscues. The Judges were able to outscore the hosts, 25-13, in points off turnovers.
  • CMU had four players score in double figures Payton Baney had 12 points as a starter, while Nicole Timko and Anna Prouty each had 12 off the bench helping the Tartans' reserves outscore the Judges', 33-22.
  • Carnegie Mellon's Catherine Or just missed a triple double, with 11 points, a game-high 10 rebounds and eight assists.
  • In addition to their bench advantage, the Tartans had a 36-26 scoring edge in points in the paint.
