Women fall at WashU, 74-50

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team dropped the first half of their University Athletic Association (UAA) Midwest road trip tonight, falling to the 24th-ranked Washington University Bears, 74-50.

  • Brandeis, 9-8, 2-4 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Washington U. led this one from wire-to-wire, scoring the game's first nine points.
  • The Bears shot 50% in the first quarter (10-20) while holding the Judges to 26.7% (4-15) as the hosts opened up a 24-10 lead after 10 minutes.
  • Brandeis senior Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham), the UAA's leading scorer, was held scoreless in the first, but she bounced back to score 10 points in the second period. Brandeis outscored the hosts, 18-10, in the stanza to close within six points, 34-28, at halftime.
  • Brandeis closed the half on an 15-3 run, with all of Ohm's first-half points coming in that stretch.
  • The teams traded buckets to start the third period, but WashU scored the next six to push their lead back to 12 points at 42-30 less than two minutes in.
  • The Judges were able to claw back within seven points on a couple of occasions, but the Bears scored the final four points to extend their lead back to 11 points at 52-41 headed into the final 10 minutes.
  • The hosts continued their run with the first three points of the fourth, and the deficit stayed in double digits the rest of the way.
  • The Brandeis offense ran out of steam, hitting just one of their 12 3-point attempts, as WashU outscored the Judges, 22-9, in the final quarter.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ohm finished with a game-high 18 points, adding six more in the third quarter but just two in the fourth.
  • Junior Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) finished with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. She also had two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
  • First-year Jessica Maina (Bradford, Mass./Brooks School) finished with nine points, hitting three of the team's five 3-pointers.
  • Lexy Harris was WashU's leader with a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Jessica Brooks added 12 points and 10 boards.
  • Catherine Goodwin had 13 points and a game-high four assists.
  • The Bears outshot the Judges, 47.5% (29-61) to 28.6% (18-63), and dominated the boards, 52-30.
  • Brandeis won the turnover battle, 14-9, for a 14-8 scoring margin in points off turnovers, but WashU's 48-18 advantage in points in the paint more than made up for the deficit.
