Reed, women rebound to defeat Rochester, 58-41

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team dominated the fourth quarter tonight, outscoring visiting University of Rochester, 20-3, as the Judges picked up their earliest University Athletic Association win since 2020 with a 58-41 victory over the Yellowjackets in Red Auerbach Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges had both a fantastic start and finish to the game. Brandeis scored the first nine points of the contest and outscored Rochester, 18-5, in the first quarter.
  • Brandeis hit 7-of-15 from the field (47%) while holding UR to 2-of-20 (10%).
  • The visiting Yellowjackets improved their offense in the second and third quarters, outscoring Brandeis 18-10 in the second and 15-10 in the third.
  • The visitors closed within one on a couple of occasions and took their first lead of the game with 44 second left in the stanza on a jumper by Tia Poulakidas that made it 36-35.
  • Brandeis senior Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) hit a straight-away 3-pointer with 15 seconds to go, but UR's Grace Corelli beat the buzzer with a lay-up, tying the game at 38-all headed into the final stanza.
  • Rochester's Bridget Miller scored the first point of the fourth period from the line, but it was all Judges from there, as Brandeis outscored the Yellowjackets 20-2 the rest of the way.
  • Ohm gave Brandeis the lead for good with a jumper at the 7:44 mark and the hosts never looked back.
  • Rochester missed 14-of-15 field goal attempts (6.7%) in the final 10 minutes The Judges hit just 4-of-12 (33%), but three of their four buckets came from 3-point range, where they were 3-of-5 (60%). Brandeis also hit 9-of-12 from the line in the final quarter to keep the visitors at bay.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The big scorers for Brandeis were junior Abby Kennedy (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) and Ohm, who combined for 37 of the team's 58 points.
  • Kennedy led all scorers with 20 points, hitting 7-of-17 from the field, 2-of-6 from 3-point range, and 4-of-6 from the line. It was her second 20-point performance of the season.
  • Ohm added 17 points on 6-of-18 overall, 3-of-7 from downtown, and 2-of-2 from the line.
  • The Brandeis defense had a pair of high-powered performances as well. Junior Brooke Reed (Chantilly, Va./Westfield) grabbed a game- and career-high 18 rebounds, the most in a game by a Brandeis player since 2015 and three shy of tying the school record of 21, last accomplished in 1998.
  • The Judges outrebounded Rochester, 46-40, in the contest.
  • Junior Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) continued her climb towards the school's career blocked shot record with five, one shy of a school single-game record.
  • Vaughan now has 33 blocks on the season, just seven shy of the single-season record she established last year, and 84 for her career, also seven shy of the Judges' career record.
  • Brandeis hadn't won its second game of the conference season since 2020, when they also defeated Rochester.
  • UR was led by 13 points by Abby Gress and 10 from Poulakidas, who had nine in the 'Jackets' third-period comeback.
  • Gress also had a team-high nine rebounds.
UP NEXT
  • Brandeis will take on Emory on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. for Alumni Family. Rochester will face top-ranked NYU at noon on Sunday. The Violets defeated the Eagles this evening, 83-52.
