Women rally against Emory before falling just short, 65-62

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team erased a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but visiting Emory scored the game's final three points from the free-throw line as the Eagles won a University Athletic Association contest in Red Auerbach Arena, 65-62.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 8-6, 1-2 UAA.
  • Emory: 9-6, 1-2 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second game in a row, the Judges got off to a hot start, outscoring Emory, 28-21, in the first quarter. The Judges hit 10-of-15 from the field in the first, as well as all seven of their free throws.
  • Junior forward Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) led the way with nine points, as she connected on all of the Judges' seven foul shots. Junior Abby Kennedy (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) also netted nine points, hitting 4-of-5 from the field with a 3-pointer.
  • Emory's Hannah Malik led the visitors with eight points.
  • Brandeis still led by nine points after two more Vaughan free throws made it 34-25 with 3:55 left in the second quarter before Emory closed the half on an 11-5 run to closed within three points at the break, 39-36.
  • The Judges cooled off in the second, hitting just 4-of-18 from the field, while Emory was 6-of-14 as they cut into the lead.
  • The Eagles took their first lead since 2-0 just 43 seconds into the third on a bucket by Chloe Kreusser.
  • The visitors extended the run to 17-1 over the first 5:12 when Malik converted a four-point play that gave EU their largest lead at 13 points, 53-40.
  • Brandeis responded with the game's next six points to stem the bleeding, and the Judges closed the third on an 11-3 run of their own to close within 56-51 entering the fourth.
  • The big runs continued into the final stanza, as Emory scored six of the first eight points, going back ahead by nine at 62-53 on a McKenzie Carter bucket off a turnover.
  • Brandeis quickly responded, as a 3-pointer by first-year Jessica Maina (Bradford, Mass./Brooks School) jump-started the offense. Junior Brooke Reed (Chantilly, Va./Westfield) beat the shot clock with a lay-up, and then senior Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) scored the game's next two buckets, tying the game with 1:22 left in the contest.
  • On the next Emory possession, the Eagles' Mary Mullinax hit both of her free throws with 1:16 left in what proved to be the winning points.
  • Brandeis committed a turnover on their next possession, and even after getting a stop, the Eagles forced another Judge miscue.
  • Emory's Malik made just 1-of-2 from the line with just six seconds left, giving Brandeis one last shot to tie, but Ohm's decent look from 3-point range was off the mark, giving the visitors the three-point win.
