Watler, women sink Rhode Island College, 4-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team used a dominant defensive performance and scored a pair of first half goals today as the Judges defeated the host Rhode Island College Anchorwomen, 4-0, in a battle of undefeated non-conference foes today in Providence.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 3-0.
  • Rhode Island College, 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior back Rachel Watler (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch) was involved in both first-half goals.
  • Just 5:15 into the contest, first-year forward Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy Charter School) was pulled down in the box. Watler took the ensuing penalty kick and buried it into the left netting for her first collegiate goal.
  • Late in the half, in the 40th minute, Watler served a corner kick into the box that first-year midfielder Katie Collins (Littleton, Mass./Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School) tapped into an open net. It was Collins' second-straight game with a goal.
  • In the second half, the Judges scored two more goals. In the 53rd minute. Sophomore Tanvi Raju (Hyderabad, India/Indus International School) notched her team-leading fifth score of the season after some nifty passing, with junior Sam Kipperman (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug) and first-year Laurene Creteau (Madison, N.J./Madison) each earning an assist.
  • Raju is also tied for the UAA scoring lead with her five goals.
  • In the 88th minute, junior Caroline Alcock (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) closed out the scoring on a feed from senior Dominique Paglia (Westford, Mass./Westford Acad.). It was her first career goal.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Judges outshot the Anchorwomen, 26-6, including 19-0 in the first half. They also owned a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Brandeis graduate transfer Rachel Ross (Portchester, N.Y./Somers) was untested in goal in the first half, while senior Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla./NSU University School) made four stops in the second 45 minutes. Chloe Angelone had five saves and two goals allowed for RIC in the first half, while Nicole Nunes did not make a save in the second, also allowing two scores.
  • Brandeis has outscored its first three opponents this season, 15-0.
  • This was the first meeting between the two teams since 2006 – a 3-2 Brandeis win in overtime - and just the second in program history.
