Beninda brace helps men's soccer outlast Vassar, 3-2, for first win

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Brandeis University men's soccer junior Nico Beninda (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) delivered his first collegiate multi-goal game today to help the Judges defeat host Vassar College, 3-2, in a non-conference showdown today on the road.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 1-1-1.
  • Vassar, 2-1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Beninda, who entered the game with three career goals, scored twice in the first half.
  • In the sixth minute, sophomore Aidan Chuang (New York, N.Y./Milton Acad.) drove into the box and drew the Brewer defense to him. Chuang slid the ball to Beninda, who finished into a wide open net to make it 1-0.
  • In the 41st minute, Beninda took advantage of a Vassar turnover deep in the defensive end. He lasered a shot over the Brewer goalie and under the crossbar to give the Judges a 2-0 lead at the break.
  • The Judges got a crucial insurance goal in the 79th minute, as sophomore Ben Vogelman (Cape Town, South Africa/Herzlia) delivered a feed from sophomore Maddox Yu (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) to make it 3-0. It was Vogelman's first career goal.
  • Vassar scored twice in the last four minutes of the game, including a goal with 24 seconds left in regulation to make things interesting, but the Judges saw out the final ticks of the clock to earn their first win of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The teams were even in shots in the first half at 5-all, with Vassar owning a 9-4 advantage after pressing to tie things up to finish with a 14-9 advantage.
  • The Brewers had eight corner kicks, while Brandeis did not have any. The Judges were whistled for 13 fouls to 11 for the hosts.
  • Brandeis senior Quintin Wrabley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) made two saves in each half to finish with a season-high four. Vassar's Jacob Raphan did not have a save, as all three of the Judges' shots on goal went in the net.
  • This was the third-ever meeting between Brandeis and Vassar, and the first in Poughkeepsie. The Brewers won a suspended game in Waltham last season, 2-0. The Judges also won a 2012 NCAA tournament game with a last-minute goal, 1-0.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will go for a second-straight win on Tuesday evening at home against Bridgewater State at 7 p.m.
