Verstovsek reaches 1,000-kill plateau in 3-1 win over Simmons

BOSTON, Mass. – Brandeis University volleyball senior outside hitter Lara Verstovsek (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) became the 10th player in Judges' history to reach the 1,000-kill plateau tonight in Brandeis's 3-1 victory at Simmons College. Set scores were 23-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-19.

INSIDE THE RECORD
  • Verstovsek entered the match 12 kills shy of the plateau. She had five kills in the first set and five more in the second to reach 998.
  • She delivered a kill on the first point of the third set, then reached the plateau to stake Brandeis to a 16-10 lead on an assist from first-year setter Samantha Lin (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton).
  • Verstovsek had three kills in the third set and four in the fourth to finish with a match-high 17 on the evening and 1,005 for her career.
  • Verstovsek is the first Brandeis player to reach the mark since 2014, when Liz Hood '15 ended her career with 1,315.
  • Verstovsek is 27 kills behind Bridget McAllister '10 in ninth place on the career list.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Judges controlled every aspect of the match, hitting .325 as a team (51 kills, 13 errors, 117 total attacks), while holding Simmons to a .000 percentage (30 K-30 E-127 TA).
  • Brandeis had 10 blocks compared to three for the Sharks, won the serving battle, nine aces to five, and produced 10 more digs, 58-48.
  • In addition to her 17 kills, Verstovsek hit for a .419 percentage (17 K-4 E-31 TA) and had a match-high 18 digs. She also tied for match-high honors with three service aces.
  • Two other Judges reached double figures in kills – junior outside hitter Anna Ertischek (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery) who had 12, and first-year OH Madison Haft-Abromovitch (Stratford, Conn./Rye CDS), who had 10 for the first time in her career.
  • Ertischek also matched Verstovsek's total with three aces.
  • Sophomore Alina Nowakowski (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) led the net defense with five block assists, while Haft-Abromovitch had four blocks, including one solo. First-year Kennedy Lilly (Atlanta, Ga./Eagle's Landing Christian Acad.) also had four block assists.
  • Lin led all players with 21 assists, while classmate Alexa Ho (Queens, N.Y./Frances Lewis) had 18. First-year libero Isabella Irizarry (Guaynabo, P.R./Cupeyville School) had 15 digs, behind only Verstovsek.
  • Simmons' Zoe Chatterton led the hosts with 15 kills, while Carolina Rodriguez had 17 digs. April Beatty had 12 assists.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will head to eastern New York for the Skidmore Invitational this weekend. They will face the host Thoroughbreds, SUNY-Cortland and Williams.
